Black Bear Success 2005

WELL I JUST GOT BACK FROM TWO 5 DAY TRIPS TO PWS. 5 OF US ARROWED 3 BEARS. ONE MIGHT MAKE P & Y. HAIR QUALITY EXCELLENT. GREAT TRIPS EVEN THOU THE WEATHER WAS HORRIBLE THE FIRST TRIP. I DID NOT GET A BEAR THIS SPRING.

6 OTHER FRIENDS TOOK 5 BEARS ALL BUT ONE WITH BOW. 6TH PERSON WAS NOT INTENDING TO SHOOT A BEAR THIS YEAR...LET HIS WIFE SHOOT A 6-6 WITH 19 INCH SKULL WITH HER BOW. HER FIRST BOW KILL I BELEIVE. THE NON-BOW BEAR WAS AGGRESSIVE AND WAS PISTOLED.

HOW HAS EVERYONE ELSE DONE?

- PAT

Way to go.

Nimrod,

Sounds like a great and exciting hunt. Even though you did not get one you sound like you had a great time and that's what is most important. Killing a bear is just the icing on the cake.

No hunts here, ended up working 7 days for the last month and now I have the honey-do list to work on before moose season.

I have noticed that is has been alittle slow on here, maybe with bear season coming to a end it might pick up some. Getting the list together for setting up moose camp, only got alittle over 6 weeks until it is time to start hauling in and gettting it up. With my son starting school this year I will only have about 14 days to hunt, but since I do not have to be back to work until the 26th of september, I will stay a few extra days after season and take in the scenery. I figured I would break up my hunt into 2 parts, sept 1st thru the 10th and then head back up and hunt the last 4 days, then spend the extra days packing everything up and sip a few cold ones and reflect.

Anyone else got any plans for the upcoming caribou and moose season?

AlaskaBoy.

ALL THE BOARDS ARE SLOW. NICE WEATHER PEOPLE ARE OUT ENJOYING IT. I HAVE A WEEK MORE HERE AT WORK THEN OFF FOR TWO HAVE ALOT OF FISHING PALNED HALIBUT AND BOWFISHING FOR PIKE. YOUNGEST IS COMING UP FROM COLO. SO IT WILL BE A BUSY TWO WEEKS OFF BETWEEN HONEY DOOS AND FISHING.

THE BEAR HUNT WAS ALOT OF FUN ESP. WITH FIRST TIME BOWHUNTERS FOR BEARS AND MULTIPLE BEARS COMING UP OUR TREES TO CHECK US OUT.

Awesome AKNimrod! When I get a Brown Bear, Sheep, and Goat I'd like to go on a black bear bowhunt in Southeast. I think it would be awesome to do that in the spring.

My high dollar hunt for the year is for sheep in the Talkeetna's. We leave on Aug. 6th as this is the only time our pilot could take us. Any of you guys have a gear list for sheep hunting? I have a pretty good idea, but I'm looking for any "special" tips.

Also, I have a choice between two rifles. Which one should I take? Remington 700 Mountain Rifle, blued and wood, in .270 Winchester. or.... Remington 700 stainless/syn. in .300 RUM.

The mountain rifle is lighter, but the .300 will reach out and touch 'em if needed.

Opinions, please?

Also, we will be hitting the Kings hard soon and have been pounding the sheefish as of late. Got to love the summer.

How are the skeets where you are at? They are terrible here this summer.

STATE BIRDS ARE THICK AT HOME NONE HERE AT WORK STILL ICE ON THE LAKES. I SURE LIKE THE 270 AND IT IS A GREAT GUN FOR SHEEP. I HAVE A 300 WIN BUT WILL HAVE TO SHOW MY IGNORANCE ABOUT THE 300 RUM, BEING MAINLY A BOWHUNTER I GUESS I CAN USE THAT EXCUSE. I DID USE MY 300 WIN 25 YEARS AGO ON MY SHEEP 350-400 YARD SHOT DROPPED IT LIKE A BAD HABIT NEVER TOOK A STEP. STILL CRACKED A HORN TIP :-( DUG IT INTO THE GROUND AND BODY FLIPPED OVER.
TIPS-GOOD PACK, GOOD BOOTS, GOOD TENT BE IN GOOD SHAPE AND ROUND IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH EVEN THOU IT IS A GOOD SHAPE :-) I LIKE THE KOFLACH PLASTIC BOOTS I ALSO CARRY A LONG HANDLED MTN AX GREAT WALKING STICK AND SAFETY ITEN IF YOU FALL AND SLIDE. ESP FOR GOAT HUNTING BUT I ALSO UUSE IT FOR SHEEP HUNTS.
