Stoopid deer

I was getting out of my truck Saturday morning, about 4:45, putting on my blaze orange vest and Iheard a "huff!" sound, I looked, and not 10 feet away from me was a small deer, (it's very dark out there) and it just stood there, even when I kicked at it. It finally took off. That deer will not last long in Carter County Missouri if it's that trusting.

That begs the question,

Did your son send a second arrow at him, and if so, what was the outcome?

You know we, especially me, love to hear stories. The only thing better than hearing a story is telling my own.

I've personally never been convinced that whitetail deer are "smart". I think they have amazing senses and reflexes, but they do some dumb things. Sometimes they are so skittish you can't get near them, other times they will almost feed out of your hand.

I've only killed two deer with a bow, and I don't think either one of them was the genius in their class.

But like I saw somewhere, until deer learn to read, talk, and write, the hunting stories will favor the hunter. I wonder what some of the deer think of us at times.

The "smartest" thing about a deer is his nose.

Took a shot at a small Georgia buck with my bow--arrow hit dead between its legs (do I get 3 pts?). The buck made a quick circle and came back to stretch out its neck to sniff the arrow. The next one centered a vertebrae and down he went. Took a third one in the boiler room to finish things off. Wasn't having a good day with my bow that day.

Welcome to the board.

Stuff like that happens. Last season, I missed two easy shots with my rifle on a deer at less than 100 yards only to kill two deer later that day at 250 yards after I ran 150+ yards to get into position before they were able to run over a hill and entirely out of range.

The bad days is why it is called hunting and not killing.

I was turkey huntung and walking a railroad track bed into a place I had been seeing and hearing a ton of good Toms- the morning was especially foggy and you couldn't see clearly more than 30 yards, it was like 45 minutes before sunrise and I was moving right along down the tracks looking at the ground and moving quickly, I finally stopped when a deer blew at me very close- I stopped and looked around and it looks like I walked right in the middle of a herd of deer- I knew they couldn't see me and didn't know what I was so I jacked a shell in my Benelli to let them know what I was and deer took off eveywhere- I counted 15 tales but I think there were more than that. First time I had ever really been worried about being run over by a deer- This was in Maine if you are wondering where I am from
