What's a good Christmas Gift
My father is a hunter and fisherman. He spent two and half months this summer fishing in Alaska. He's currently hunting pheasant in the Dakotas. He likes the outdoors and loves both hunting and fishing.
I'm looking for some ideas for a Christmas gift for him. Obviously he'll be getting a Gunslinger  , but I want to get him more than that. What would you guys recommend as a good Christmas gift for a hunter and fisherman? Something unique would be really nice. I'd ask him, but he always says he wants wool socks, and what's the fun in that? Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. GSG

That's an idea. I hadn't thought of that.
He doesn't do much deep sea fishing. He's hunted pretty much everything at one time or another. Wish I could afford to give him an African safari or something, but that's a bit beyond my budget. I'll have to give that some thought. Thanks, GSG

Depending on your budget ya might even be able to pick him up something like a guided catfish trip in the south, squirrel hunting, etc etc. Just something he aint done ALOT of.

O.k. update on this. I talked to my Dad this weekend and asked him what he wanted for Christmas. I mentioned his standard wool socks and his reply was "I have lots of wool socks." Guess I've filled that need for a while.
So, being the good daughter that I am, I then asked what he did want for Christmas. His answer? "Surprise me." So, I'm now officially desperate for ideas. While I like the idea of buying him a hunting trip, that runs into some serious money, plus he is picky about his trips. I'd rather buy him a neat gadget or something. He also likes books about the outdoors and hunting. I'm hoping someone has a good recommendation for me. GSG

Some would say it's unimaginative, but how about a nice gift certificate? Outdoorsmen are particular about their wants and it's very difficult to know both wants and needs, no matter how hard you try.
Contemplate what the results might be if he tried to select a purse or a pair of shoes as a gift for you and give serious consideration to a gift certificate. That way he can pick out exactly what he wants.

You know, I have considered that. He is pretty precise about what he likes and dislikes, so a gift certificate would let him get something he would enjoy.

Does your dad have a hunting dog? If he does he is probably like most of us dog guys who get carried away with all the neat stuff for hunting dogs from vests to first aid kits to folding water and food bowls. the list goes on and on.
Some of the new casual clothing which shows our attractions for the great outdoors are really cool. Does he belong to any sporting orginazations? Token memberships are not expensive and the magazines from Ducks Unlimited, Delta Waterfowl,National Turkey Fed really have some good articles, he will think of you each month as he reads the magazine, and your money will go to a worthy cause. I dont know what it may be but surely there is an organization for upland birds.

Bird huntin
First off GSG I was ahopin you were gonna give me....er....ahhh... a really deserving member of HC somethin. Bird hunting organizations are Pheasants Forever...lessen Rubicon an I get into 'em for the eataraunt...Quail unlimited and the Wild Turkey Federation(that is a group of people that go around drinkin up all the Wild Turkey whiskey they can git ahold of)...and of course the previously mentioned Ducks Unlimited. A really neat organization is The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation...and they gonna need the money cause the elk are takin a really big hit from the (stupid) Wolf introduction.

The thing he would appreciate most is if you would go on a hunting or fishing trip with him. Just a 1 day trip would be great. That suggestion come from an old guy that has no kids that like to hunt or fish, I guess I raised them wrong.

I hadn't thought of getting him a membership to a worthwhile organization. That's a good thought.
Skeet, sorry, but if I got you something than I would have to get everyone else something too. I'm very fond of the members of this forum, but fondness doesn't extend to 11,000+ (or whatever the latest member count is) Christmas presents. Call me crazy, but buying that number of Christmas presents might put a crimp in my plans to eat regularly and sleep indoors. So, I'm choosing food and shelter over buying presents for the HC gang. What can I say, I'm whacky that way. GSG

That's a good suggestion too. I think I will try to plan a fishing trip for next Spring when it gets warmer. We do have a good time when we go fishing. GSG

I'd have to second the ammunition idea. It's something you can always use no matter how much you have, and it keeps a long time. I give ammo as a gift quite often, it is always well received.

So that's two for ammunition. Also, little side benefit to that idea, if I bought him ammunition he might let me practice shooting with some of it.
