M1 Carbine for $999.00
I was in a gun shop yesterday and saw a well-used (NRA Good) WWII M1 carbine being shown around to the various customers. The finish was about gone on the exterior metal and the stock was really dinged up. The clincher was the hang tag of $999.00. I told them I have 6 M1 carbines and would not pay their price. All the best...

Attended gun show past weekend, 5 03A3's priced at 799.00, German sniper rifle ? priced at 2,000.00. Just proves the supply/demand theory. As the availability of these rifles diminish the prices are going to get crazy. jplonghunter |

Gil,
Yea, yea, I hear you. I bought two DCM M1 Carbines for $17.50 each plus $2.50 shipping and handling. I also used to buy gasoline for 26.9 cent per gallon, BUT them days are LONG AGO and damn far away. The reality now is a dollar ain't what it was in the 1960s. Cherish all the bargains you have on establishment. Adam

Who made the M-1 carbine?
To a collector, an M-1 carbine manufactured during the war by one of the minor makers that completed only a few might be worth that- to the collector ![]() As a user rifle, I don't think so.

The carbine was Rock-Ola
It would interest some folks, but so would my carbines by Standard Products and National Postal Meter that are NRA mint. All the best...

Lots of companies produced them, but from what I've been told the best ones came from Inland Manufacturing Co. in Dayton Ohio. I had a friend? of mine whose father had one of those and I would highly suspect due to his familys "history" that his Dad probably done some sticky fingered activity to get it. He liked to take his work home with him. Bill |

I know a lot of companies made them- after all there were something like 6 million of them made. I believe Inland was one of the major makers.
National Postal Meter, I undertsand, actually completed very few- I was thinking that a collector might pay a good buck for one of those if it completed his collection....

So far the only companies that I found that produced them were General Motors (Inland) IBM, Winchester and Rock Ola (The Juke Box Co.), National Postal Meter and Springfield. Inland was the biggest producer. Info comes from Wikipedia. Bill |

M1 Carbine production
According to Smith ans Smith in "The Book of Rifles" and W.H.B. Smith in "Small Arms of the World", there were about 7,130,000 M1 Carbines produced. None were ever made at Springfield Armory. The carbine makers were: Inland (Div.of General Motors) 2,625,000, Winchester 809,451, Underwood Elliot Fisher 545,616, Rochester Defense Corporation, Quality Hardware 359,662, Saginaw Steering Gear 739,136, Rock-Ola 228,500, National Postal Meter 413,017, Standard Products 247,155 and I.B.M 346,500. Hope this helps. If you find one in decent shape at a reasonable price, grab it. All the best...

06shooter,
Bruce N. Canfield's book, "A Collector's Guide to the M1 Garand and the M1 Carbine," states on page 144 the Rock-Ola Manufacturing Corporation's serial number blocks assigned were: 1,662,250-1,762,519 4,532,100-4,632,099 6,071,189-6,099,668 6,199,684-6,219,688 Total number of Carbines produced was 228,500, or 3.7% of total production, at an average unit cost of $58.00.
