Winter Projects

Looks like a long time until spring, so I have started a winter project. Yesterday, I stopped in a gun shop near where I work to get a can of powder. They did not have what I wanted and I started to leave. This is a pistolsmith shop, but there were a pile of used rifles and shotguns in a corner of the shop. I started going through the stack. There was a K31 Schmidt-Rubin in bad shape and overpriced. Most of the guns were overpriced.

Under the stack was what looked like a sporterized Mauser. Turns out is was a sporterized 1903 high number Springfield (made by Springfield) with a hang tag price of $200.00. The exterior metal and stock were loevly, but the bore was ruined and dark. I offered $150.00 and got it for that price.

I have a Midway barrel in .270 Winchester that will fit the 1903 and I am waiting for the local gunsmith to open today so I can drop it off. The 'smith is getting caught up on his backlog of work and assures me he can do this rifle in a few weeks. That is my winter project. What are you good folks doing? All the best...

Sounds lilke a nice project Gil.

As for myself, I'll probably be starting my BP and one of the 91/30's, totally stripping, and a full reblue and stock refinish.

You remember i was askig people earlier this year about the differences in the BLO, tung, and Casey's gun oil finishes.
I might just do one rifle of each and then post the pics to show differences.

That's if things slow down a little, and I get my lazy butt in gear though

I definately am going to follow you around when you visit gun shops. What a deal, or should I say what a steal!

My winter project is to rebarrel a Krag and refinish the stock.

Take care...
Joe

Gil,

We all need Winter Projects. Your's sounds like a nice endeavor. I plan to scope a few rifles with new scopes and retire the older scopes that are not satisfactory.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Adam

I'm gonna refinsh my Browning BAR. Strip and probalby Tung Oil the stock and forearm. Really hate the gloss finish.

Need to rescope my 280. Has a old Redfield 2x7 Widefield that a little tired. Really haven't decided what to replace it with.

Then again the wife hasn't got to me with her list.
