moisin carbine info
i have a mosin carbine with the markings of 1936r, 1891/59 on the receiver, with numerous other markings on the bottom of the receiver and the underside of the barrel.
barrel length is 19" and is the standard military barrel in 7.62x54r as far as i know with the ladder style rear sight and hooded front post style front sight. is this a decent rifle to 'sporterize'? i've never shot it and am wondering if it would be worth putting into one of the composite stocks and possibly installing a 'scope...

Don,
You came to the right place with your questions. It sounds like you have a Model 38 Carbine, or clone, and that is a nice sporter "as is." I suggest you shoot it with several types of ammo to see how it prints groups down range BEFORE you get the composite replacement stock and scope mounts. A scope is an expensive problem for the Mosin and the safety is crude at best. You have a handy arm "as is" and hopefully an accurate one. It really cannot be "sporterized" much more without big money that will not be returned if you try to sell it in the future. Adam

Adam nailed it on the head.
But consider this, you have in your hands an _excellant_ little brush gun. Nice weight and size, decent power in the cartridge, and while it's a bolt, it's simple and rugged. It may have decent accuracy but it's never goign to be a long range gun with that short barrel, so why not stick to it's current strengths? Word of warning though....with 7.62x54r and that short barrel, i recommend caution when firing it in lowlight situations |

gumpokc,
Thanks for the support; it sounds like you know your military arms. I like the M38 and the M44, but the M38 is the nicer "woods gun" in my opinion. I wear Sonic ear plugs when I shoot those Carbines afield because the muzzle blast is stout! And as you point out, the muzzle flash is also a factor. Adam

i hear ya...unfortunately, here in kaliphorniastan, it's illegal to have a flash hider and/or supressor...even on a bolt gun.
