New Toys
We had an auction last night. I picked up an NRA Ex 1891 Carcano, and a NRA vg 1891 Westinghouse Moisin-Nagant. My real joy of the night was getting a 1883 Reich revolver. This is tight, crisp action, vg bore, for $350. I've been looking for one of these for several years to shoot.

Reich Revolver
I've had the Reich revolver to the range a couple times. It's a ball to shoot. Turns out the German 10.6 x 25R is nothing but the 44 Russian cartridge, which has made it easy to get the gun back in action again.
Shooting my 225 Gr 44-40 bullet, at around 670 fps has given groups under 2" @ 20 yds. This is gonna be a real fun gun at the Wild Bunch matchs. |

Old Scout,
The old militaries are a blast to shoot. I bought a 7x57mm Rolling Block from Ye Olde Hunter in 1961 for 87 cents per pound. The gun has a mint bore and VG exterior and loves my 168 grain RN cast bullets and a dose of Unique. I need brass and dies for the 8mm Kropatchack, the 11MM Gras. I just ordered a set of RCBS dies and shell holder from Huntington along with 100 rounds of brass for the 8MM Lebel. I have a mint 1916 Carbine and an 07/15 rifle for treks over the farm with my 215 grain Lyman #323471 semi-spitzer hard cast bullet. Ah, did someone say Beau Gest? Adam

Old Militaries
Howdy Adam
Ah yes, the old turn of the century Military arms are fun. I'd like to hear how you make out with your 8 x 50R Lebel's. I have an 1886 Lebel rifle and a '16 Berthier Carbine I'm playing with. We used to reform 348W brass for thre Lebels, but that was so much work they didn't get shot much. Now that Graf has the brass back on the market it's easy to shoot these interesting rifles. Say what you will about the French, when I attach the bayonet to my Lebel, the tip is above my eye level ( I'm 6'4" ), and the whole afair must weigh cose to 10 lbs, I have a new respect for the Foreign Legion!! I am campaigning a Lebel '86 Rifle and a Lebel '92 revolver in Wild Bunch matchs. Need to get me a Kepi to wear. I wear a Pith helmet with my Ross 05/Enfield #1/Webley Mk-VI, and have one of those Black Bear Shakos to go with the Nagants. Still need a Picklehoabe also! Anybody ever shoot one of these Italian 11mm Bodello revolvers?? Maybe that should be Bordello!! Cheers Old Scout |

Just my luck
I used to have an old Webley 455 and decided to get rid of it and the empty brass I had for it. Then this week I bought a bunch of RCBS dies from a guy.. 10 sets of different rifle and pistol dies and a set of Bench rest 223 dies. Got 'em all for 70 bucks delivered. In the box was an as new set of RCBS 455 dies.. And I had at least 350 empties. It was a pretty accurate gun..even in my hands. and today at an auction I bought 4 boxes of 256 Win Mag ammo so now I can shoot my ol Contender 256 bbl now. Them things are getting expensive. There was also an old box of 455 ammo in the bunch of stuff they sold..but no gun now. People sure do go crazy at auctions. I did get two boxes of Winchester 257 Robts ammo for 12.50 though. Now I can shoot the 257 I bought last week. BTW I don't keep up on 'em but there was a Chinese SKS in the auction. It brought 400 bucks. Have they gotten that expensive?? I coulda understood if it was a Russian rifle er something. Used to sell 'em for 80 bucks.
Another question. There were two Savage lever action rifles in the auction. Looked like a marlin ...but they were in caliber 30-30 Remington. Now I know that they really wasn't a cartridge called that but I was pretty certain they were actually chambered for 30 Rem. Do anybody here remember the 30 Rem being called that? I had a mild recollection...but with Oldtimers a settin in I ain't so sure any more

It would probably be a good idea for someone to post easy to understand instructions on how to post pictures on this site.
Otta be a requirement on all sites. |
