Bushnell Laser Bore Sighter

My wife bought me a Bushnell Laser Bore Sighter for Christmas. I can't seem to get the thing to work. I choose the proper end to fit the rifle bore, turn on the light, and try to make scope adjustments by turning the elevation & windage knobs on the scope to line up the red dot with the crosshairs. But, nothing happens; nothing moves. I've tried it on 3 different rifles. Am I doing something wrong?
