Range Report - .58cal Early Virginia

07/04/09 First Range Trip
Celebrated the 4th by firing off the new .58cal Early Virginia
9" paper plate at 25 yards
3" aim point sticker
70grns Goex 2F
.018" pillow ticking
Speer .570"
Cut small notch in new rear sight
Adjusted set trigger
Shot sitting in small chair like I’d be sitting against a tree while hunting
Center held on 3" aim point sticker
Groups were single ragged holes
POI was 6 o’clock edge of paper plate
Windage was perfect, no adjustment needed
Filed down front sight in several steps

I stopped when the group moved up and started cutting the 6 o’clock edge of the 3" aim-point sticker...was getting tired and didn’t want to fall into the trap of over-filing the front sight because I might have unknowingly slipped into an un-natural shooting position, or might have been influenced by the sun & shadows on the rifle & target...decided to wait until another range trip, pick up where I left off with a fresh start / fresh look.

SUMMARY
TVM / Matt Avance did an excellent job;
Davis triggers worked perfectly;
Rice round bottom groove barrel is extremely accurate;
Chambers deluxe siler lock was 100% reliable;
NOTE: Since my only reference are T/C medium sized locks I used for years, I immediately noticed 3 things about the siler as I began handling it, priming it, etc:
1)It is very noticeably a physically larger lock;
2)The pan seems a bit smaller than the T/C pan...plus its shape is more narrow front to back, and a bit wider left to right;
3)My normal 4F pan primer only fills the T/C pan about 3/4 full...but fills the siler pan all the way, occasionally over flowing some kernels out on the edge of the pan;

Any buck would be proud to be photographed with this rifle in its antlers !
:wink:
