Exclamation Federal Hull Separation

While reading through the Shotgunworld.com forum on reloading, I found the following thread on Federal hull separation: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=13&t=202645

That is pretty alarming! Anyone else here experience anything like this?

Shell separations

I have had this happen with many different cases in the past. Most often it was with the Blue Magic case but also with Rem All Americans(1970) and other target load cases. Never had it happen with a Win AA but have heard of it happening with the "NEW" 3 piece AA cases. Surprisingly never had it happen with Fed Gold Medal..but haven't used the new ones. In fact I bought 55000 GMs from NSSA years ago and used 'em till the cows came home. Had a few other cheap Fed cases in the batch but they got loaded one time and were thrown out. It can happen to anything I guess..but usually with cases with paper base wads in my experience..of course when I started loading..paper was all we had...sigh! Smelled much better than these new fangled shells

Top Guns??

No the top guns got shot 3 or 4 times and went in the trash. They were a really good load when they first came out..but did have a paper base wad at least in the beginning. The ones that got loaded and thrown were mostly Federal game load cases and such. 6 Star crimp and paper base wad. Believe it or not I paid 350 bucks for those empties..Penny a piece delivered and they figured They had 35000..kept sending 'em till they were gone and ended up with 55000. They just wanted to be rid of 'em I guess. I sold a few to get some of my money back and used the rest. Still have about a 1000 once fired that are loaded with a 1150 ft a second load with an ounce and an eighth of 8 1/2s. Probably never shoot 'em as I don't use the 12 much anymore..

I have never experienced anything like that on any brand of shells. Usually, in my case, the first thing to go is the crimp or more often cracks develop in the shell body just below the crimp.

About 7 years ago I had it happen with a couple Remington Nitro 3 1/2" steel loads. Wrote Remington about it and got a free cap and $20 gift certificate.
