Range Trip

Being less than 60 days till hunting season, I took a range trip.......old M70
in 30-06 still shooting at same place it has for years.
New addition was the M70 featherweight 308......I threw together a seat of pants load with 165 speer and IMR 4064.........3 shots you could cover with a quarter....no extraction probs and primers look good.......think I'll use it as a backup gun..

Dan,

Excellent range results. What are you hunting? How old is your "old" M70 .30-06? I have an old 06 M70 made in 1939 with a pre-WWII Koll-Morgan 4X scope. I hunt with it annually for PA deer.

Elk.....my 06 is a 1952......this 308 was the one I adopted about a year ago....the one with B&L 4x scope. The ammo was a throw together load just to go'bang'......don't think I'll mess with it!!!!!!!!!
Dan

I had never used 4064....this came from several boxes of stuff I got from a friend who had to quit bench shooting.........I totally trust the guy or I wouldn't have taken the powder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just decided to try it.....

I need to get 3 of my ARs out and checked then tuned up. A 6.5 Grendel, and two 358 MGP guns.
Next door neighbor at the farm told me last weekend that he is seeing wild hog sign behind his house, so I need to get the night sights and cans ready for some evening eradication/elimination.

I use the subsonic stuff and cans when it gets late in the evening. It will be nice to finally get the IR laser illuminator and IR scope out for a full up, try out with the 250gr 358 bullets.

Just picked up a couple 06s. One was A Remington 30S Their sported version of the 1917 Enfield. No scope but had a Redfield peep. Came with 2 full boxes of 150 gr Core Lockt ammo. Shoots pretty well...but heavy. Price was ok at 175 bucks. 2nd was a Rem 721 with a Williams peep and for some odd reason a Williams side mount with a period 1 inch 4X Kollmorgan scope post crosshairs reticle shot 5 rounds of the old Red and green box ammo I got with the 30S. well under an inch with the first shot taken with the peep but at 50 yds. The other 4 with scope. Shot to same point which really surprised me. Paid 225 for it. 30S is going. Gonna keep the 721. With the peep at 50 yes the 30S shot under 2 inches. If I had full use of the sight in my right eye..bet it would do better. The ol '06 is still a great caliber

LOL, having been blessed with a couple of 30S, I can relate. 2 stage trigger wasn't too difficult to manage....things kicked like a stud mule with the steel butt plates! Got talked out of both of them....
