.17 Rem. and Berger bullets.
Been testing some 25g non-mef, non-moly .17 Bergers today with British Bulldog.............here's a three shot group!
I now wish I'd bought some 30g Bergers to try!.....er, anyone got a few spare? UKF. |

Real nice group. I can tell you that the 30 will group differently than the 25`s with the same load. When I start working up a load for a new rifle I set the powder drop on my Dillon 550 and load 5 rounds each of several different bullets. I then up the powder drop a 1/2 grn. or so and load the same bullets. It`s really very interesting to see how different bullets react as the powder charge goes up. I`ve run loads with 2 different .17 cal. guns in this maner comparing the 25 and 30 grn. Bergers to Calhoon bullets of different bullet weights. Some bullets seem to work better at one velosity while other seem to work well over a wide range of velosities. I`ll see if I`ve got any 30 bergers around here, got a kid asleep between me and my vault right now, so I`ll have to look later. I`ve gotten good groups with both the 25 and 30 grn. Bergers, and how did the Calhoon bullets compair the the 25 grn. Berger groups you posted???????

The Calhoons just don't seem to work ........in my rifle?
I just can't get them to tie together, I'm going to try the 28g on foxes eventually though........that big hollowpoint looks the business! cheers catfish! UKF. |

UKF,
Why would you want to screw with THAT group? That bullet is fine. I have killed coyotes out to, well, lazered one after the fact, at 285 yards. Killed several at closer ranges too and they all died like the hammer of God hit them in the head. For foxes, I dont know why you would want anything but the Berger bullets that shot that little group. Andy |

Andy, that bullet/load is what I'm going to use, but..............while I'm in the 'testing' mode, I'd like to try some 30g Bergers as well!
I've read that the 30g puts the .17 onto a higher level for killing, and I'd like to see that for myself..........same as wondering how the big hollowpointed 28g calhoons work. Also I just like to do these things! cheers, UKF. |

I got your PM and the bullets are on their way, the 32gr Gencos are a rebated boatail HP design, they seem to shoot quite well when jammed or seated deep into the rifling. Genco also puts out a 29gr VLD flatbase as well as a 26gr VLD rebated boatail which is the bullet i used most this season with super results on Fur. |

I've been using the Hornady 20VMAX and 25HP in my Remington BDL in .17Rem. My results are mediocre. I just had 200 Berger 25gr. arrive. After seeing that picture my hopes are restored. I'm anxious to try them. I've been using IMR4320 and Varget at about 4000fps. Is there something else you would suggest? Best wishes.

Cal,
RL15 seems to work in alot of guns for some reason. Mine likes 22.5 grs of it. I know several other guys that use the same or close to the same load. FWIW Andy |

Like Andy, i also have been shooting R-15 for a long time now, my load is 26grns or 44 clicks on my Jones measure in my .17DT (.100"short .17PPC), using the Genco 26grVLD, In the Rem case with 25gr projectiles i would keep it down near where Andy is or a bit hotter but not to exceed 25grs of R-15, Varget is another excellent powder in the .17Rem, very close in burn rate to R-15, a tad slower, but does not throw as well for me from my measure due to its slightly larger granules, all in all R-15 is tough to beat in the .17Rem. |
