She's not a hunting dog, but...
I know this is a forum for hunting dogs, so I hope I don't offend anyone with post. Our family dog ( 1/2 black lab, 1/2 collie) is almost 10 years old and has just started digging up the back yard. We have been in this house for just over 1 1/2 years. She did dig some when she was a puppy but out grew it. There is a new puppy ( pound mutt) that we got about 2 1/2 months ago. These two dogs love each other and play all the time, so I don't know if she is upset about the new dog. What can I do to stop the digging? Allen |

Keep her inside when unsupervised...
Put dog shoes on her. E-Collar her and keep a close eye on her without her KNOWING you are. These are all JMO. It's how I'd approach it. Jabba

Too Hot?
How hot is it where you live? Dogs will dig up nice cool dirt to lay in when it gets hot. I am a firm believer in having a kennel run for dogs - that way they have their own area to do whatever they would like to do.

Thanks Doc E,
My wife said that she has seen her lying in the fresh dirt and in the hole itself when it is big enough. It gets quite hot here in the summer time and even though we keep her shaved I guess she is still hot. We are going to try keeping her in during the heat of the day and see what happens. Thanks for the info and ideas. Allen |

Yup she is Hot and the dirt is cool for her. I have used those "misters" that put out a fine spray of water and now I have big water tanks for them to lay in and they love it.

Got a new twist to the story.
I do believe she is trying to cool off in the summer, but she was still digging through the winter whenever we were not watching her. I just found out we have MOLES in our area and her is going after them. The reason I know this is that one of the little digger was not fast enough and she dispatched him properly. (part here, part over there, some parts missing) ![]() We keep her in a shaded kennel whenever we can't be outside with her or inside when we are home. I am going to put a floor in kennel to stop her from digging it up. Thanks for all of the in-put Allen |

I had a maxed breed years ago that was a mole hunter. It didn't last long as he got pretty good at it and we never had a mole in the yard long enough to tear anything up. He used to bring them to us on the porch.
