Police Officer Killed in Boiling Springs Lakes

(01/18/05 - BOILING SPRING LAKES) — A Boiling Spring Lakes police officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop, and a suspect is in custody.
The Brunswick County sheriff's office says Officer Mitch Prince stopped 19-year-old Darrell Maness this morning on N-C 87. Authorities say Maness and Prince got into a struggle, during which Maness apparently grabbed the officer's gun and shot Prince three times.

Police Chief Richard White says Maness led officers on a chase that ended when the suspect was captured in Oak Island as he tried to hide in the crawlspace of a mobile home. Officers used tear gas to force Maness from under the home.

Maness, who's from Burlington, was wanted in Alamance County on a probation violation on a charge of delivery of marijuana.

The 36-year-old Prince had been an officer with the Boiling Spring Lakes force since 2003. White says he's the first police officer from the town to die in the line of duty.

Prince is survived by his wife and two young children.
