savage-good or not?

lookin for a 338win mag 1st choice or a 300win mag 2nd choice. must have detachable mag adjustable trigger no less than 24" barrel as accurate as can be bought for under a 1000$ and an elevated cheek peice. muzzel break is nice. the sav 116fsak looks like it is a good gun at a glance. what do you think? the only thing that it doesn't have is a cheek peice! anyone have one? they say it shoots quite well! any input is greatly appreciated

Savage Arms probably produces the most accurate out-of-the-box rifles today (although unless you're a benchrest fanatic you'd never see the difference). I've shot a few of the newer rifles, and I've got a few friends who have some. I haven't heard one bad word about them yet. I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

I've shot a Ruger 77MKII Win Mag for about 12 years now and I have not a single complaint about it. Well, now that I come to think of it, the factory trigger was pretty bad, but I replaced that with a Timney trigger and that is the best trigger I have ever used. The factory synthetic stock was pretty bad too, so I replaced that with a Hogue overmolded. Now, I barely shoot anything else.

yeh i have the stainless m77 with the ugly uncomfortable stock and the crappy 40lbs unadjustable trigger too. it's in 280rem and drops deer like it's going out of style, but i need a mag for moose and elk and as i do enjoy my ruger i don't think i would buy another. savage seems to have all that i am lookng for except the cheek peice. i guess you cant have your cake and eat it!

I don't think you can do even near as good as a Savage if you're looking in the same price range. Everyone I know who owns a Savage ends up owning more of them. I would say go ahead with it, because from what I know about marketing, when people start liking something, and the world finds out there's great quality in it at an affordable price, one or the other goes away, usually the affordable price.

I agree with most accurate out-of-the-box gun on market. Their new AcuTrigger is the safest trigger on the market, great function and fully adjustable to 2lbs. You may find a better looking gun without looking too hard but it's unlikely to be cheaper or more accurate.

It is called the demand/supply curve. As the demand increases for a product and/or the supply goes down, the cost usually goes up. The thing with the firearms industry is that only a certain number of rifles are sold every year, so I seriously doubt that any manufacturer is having a problem meeting the demand. The only problem they have is in forecasting what the demand will be.

Okay, I am completely off track, but I loved economics class in undergrad, just didn't love it enough to pursue it as a career.

Now, with that all said, when the Beretta 391 Teknys sporting clays shotgun came out, I had the hardest time finding one. I received a quote from somebody for $1,250, but they could never get the gun in. Ended up seeing it on a shelf for $1,350 and I just bought it. It has been the best shotgun I have ever shot (i.e., it fits me great).

The Savage rifle is the BEST production factory rifle, at any price, when it comes to barrel quality, trigger quality, chamber head-space dimensions, and gas handling design.

They hit the price point by using birch instead of walnut for their stocks, through savvy design, and by using the barrel nut system to quickly AND accurately headspace the rifle.

For a rifle that will be used, the Savage is hard to beat. JMO, Dutch.

I liked the acutrigger, as much as I like my Rugers rifles with Timneny triggers installed.

The accutrigger is far less expensive.

Did I already post that I didn't like the feel of the action on the Savage. It might be because I only use Rugers that the Savage action feels uncomfortable to me. I picked up the Savage, tried the action on it, and then had the clerk hand me the Ruger 77MKIIVT in .22-250 and the action felt so much nicer on the Ruger. I guess it depends on what we are all accustomed to.

i guess were the minority, most i talk say the action on rugers feel horrible. i always dissagree..

all three of my rugers have in my opion a very goos smooth feeling action, this could be in part due to two of them being older than me and my 2506 getn alot of use.

If you like the Savage but hate the stock as most people do. Try looking on the web for Boyds Gunstocks they make most of the laminated wood stocks you see on the Ruger,Reminton, Howa rifles as well as many others. They usually have several styles and colors and I think they also make custom stocks also.
