Front sight on 1858 Remington
I did some playing around with my 1858 Remington replica, and found it to be extremely accurate with a 30 grain charge of FFFg and a Hornady round ball. However, it shoots below the point of aim about 4". I am wondering if anyone makes a replacement front sight that is a little shorter. I know I can file down the front sight, but would prefer NOT to do this, as I shoot conicals from time to time as well. Also, can anyone tell me what the safe, maximum load is for this gun? I have room for more powder, and was wondering if adding another 5 grains of FFFg might make the ball shoot more to the point of aim. Thanks in advance.

Mr. 16 gauge,
The Lyman Black Powder Handbook says on page 75 that the maximum load of Goex 3F in a .44 C&B with 138 grain ball is 37.0 grains. My accuracy load in my Remington 1858 New Army is 25 grains and a .454" ball. My revolver shoots to point of aim. If yours is 4" low at 25 yards, I would just hold to the top of the bull and let the front sight alone since you also shoot conicles. I think you will find higher velocity loads shoot lower due to shorter barrel time. Adam
