Motorist shot/killed by the Police

Man Tries To Run Over Canton Officer

CANTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A man who was fatally shot by police Monday morning was accused of crashing into a Michigan State Police patrol car and attempting to run over a Canton police officer.

The man led police on a chase, which ended with his sport utility vehicle crashed into the side of a Canton Township home, Local 4 reported. The chase started when Westland police witnessed the man making an illegal turn in the area of Warren and Farmington Roads at about 9 a.m., Local 4 reported. Officers attempted to stop his SUV, but the man fled, according to police.

The driver led officers from Westland to Canton, into Washtenaw County and back to Canton, police said.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Department, Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department, Michigan State Police and Canton police joined Westland police in the pursuit, according to police. The man rammed into a Michigan State Police patrol car with his SUV during the chase. It was first believed he tried to run over a state troooper near Ford and Beck roads, but Local 4 later learned it was a Canton officer.

Police opened fire on the suspect, Local 4 reported. He was dead on arrival at St. Joseph's Hospital at about 10 a.m., police said.

The Canton officers who shot the man were placed on administrative leave pending an investigation, police said.

Michigan State Police and the Canton Police Department continue to investigate the incident. Officers were investigating why the man fled police and were checking into a possible criminal background.
