Need glasses now
I have gotten to the age that I need glasses to see things clearly at a distance. It’s not so bad that I can’t tell what something is, its just fuzzy around the edges and not as clear as it used to be. My sight is not bad enough to wear contact lenses, which I don’t think I would like anyway, but is much better with the glasses. I did not realize my sight had changed that much.
My problem happened yesterday at the range when I tried to shoot three different open sight long guns I wanted to practice with. I can see the target great now until I try to sight in on the target. Then all I see is the edge of my glasses. I have to turn my head at an odd angle and my shot groups out of know good guns were all over the place. I hope that I am not the only person this has happened to. Could use some ideas here. What do you do? Allen aka “Four Eyes” |

I can empathize with you. I'm about 5 years older than you and I started to notice changes about five or six years ago. The difference is that I can see just fine at a distance, it's close-up that I have a problem with. I know several others who said that they noticed a difference at about the same age. Reading glasses seem to help with almost everything except shooting. I just can't focus near AND far like I used to. I can see the target just fine, it's the sights, especially the rear one, that are blurry for me. I do better with no glasses than I do with reading glasses, but I do best with a scope. I guess I should get a professional examination and prescription glasses, but I keep putting it off. You know the story, It's too expensive, It takes too much time, The problem isn't really that bad, Etc... You ain't alone. Lots of us have deteriorating senses and we learn to live with it, others get a professional opinion. I guess I'm in the first group.

I might also suggest you look into (pun intended) Decot Hy-Wyd glasses.
They were designed by a shooter, for shooters. They sit higher and wider than standard glasses - hence the name - and allow you to see through the lens rather than the frame when you mount a gun. I wear mine as daily glasses, even though I only need reading lenses. I had them set up as plano tops with 1.25 diopter bifocal. Perfect. I'm a dealer for the glasses, and I sell at about 10% less than factory direct. Here's the official Decot WEBSITE

Seeing well is one of the things I miss from my 20's....
My eyes are 61 now. I can see the target, but I cannot see the rear sight. Mojo Sights work wonders on the milsurp rifles. Don't know if they have started making anything for commercial guns. My Swede, with iron Mojos, will routinely do 1 3/4" groups at 100. www.mojosights.com. You can take a few of pieces of black electrical tape, and make an aperture, about 3/16" on a side, in the center of your eyeglasses. I usually make it triangular. It's amazing what that will do for you when there is abundant light. Other than that, it's scope city, as far as I know. Oh, I did hear about a new surgery coming out, where they replace your lens with one that is perfect for your eye, and gives you a full range of focus, just like when you were young. |

I don't know if this would be a fix for your specific problem but I know a whole bunch of guys that have had the Lasik Surgery done. These are all guys that have worn glasses or contacts for a long time. They have all had extraordinary results. You might want to check it out.
At 43, I find my eyes are changing but it's most up very up close stuff. I'm still 20/10 and holding on!

Thanks for all the info, except for the cornmeal and cinnamon.
The surgery may happen down the road but insurance does not cover it for now. Rocky, thanks for the info on the glasses. The problem there is that I just spent $550 on light weight frames and lenses. I just cant spend more at this time. I guess for now I will just learn to work with it. Oh well, just means more time at the range. Allen |

I suppose it's too late to ask for a refund, huh?
I do understand. I had my eyes checked and was dubious about the recommendation. But I bought glasses, anyway. They actually made me see worse! I took them back after three days and demanded a refund. They wanted to re-fit me, but I was adamant. That was six years ago, and I still need no help except for reading. Even then, I only use a 1.25 diopter for reading - and a 0.5 diopter for computer work. Not bad for a 58-year old.

I hate my glasses, but I caint stand the thought of puttin them contact lenses in my eyes. Knowin my luck, I'd poke my dern eyeball out the first time I tried!
I just went to the eye dr 2 weeks ago, and got new glasses. I aint realize how bad my eyesight was goin downhill..so I'm glad I went. I got them transitions lenses and frames fer 120$ from wal-mart. I'm perty tickled w/ em..only bad news I got was that I found out that I got glaucoma (er however you spell it). Well, she said it was the startin of it..I had some indentions on the back of my eye, and my left eye is way worse than the right. I knew that fer a while tho..and I adjusted my shootin fer it. I always use my best eye fer shootin, esp. w/ open sights. I am a firm believer that squintin when yer tryin to shoot is about as useless a 1-legged man at a butt-whoopin contest, and you'll wind up missin more than hittin anythin. If you cover yer eye w/ a big ole spoon, focus on somethin, and then cover the other eye and do the same thing, you can tell perty quick which eye is werse than the other.
