I just had to Google that one.
I had thoughts of regular old rocks with bullet splashes on them - the only thing some "hunters" ever shoot. But, no. They are apparently real rocks, allegedly mined from someplace in the Rocky Mountains that contain so many irrestistible trace elements that deer crowd to them like free appetizers at the local bar. Here's a LINK. If it's true, where are the herds of deer milling around and licking rocks here in the middle of the Rockies? I haven't seen that just yet!

All joking aside, there is an element of truth to it.
Lots of critters will be drawn to salt licks for the trace elements they unknowingly crave. There are places where the rocks are licked white by animals, and that's where (allegedly) those blocks are mined. It's considered baiting and illegal in many places to place cattle salt blocks out for deer. Why? because it DOES attract deer. I'd just question whether it's better (assuming it's legal) to buy some expensive and gimmicky "trophy" salt when a cattle block would probably work as well. And I'm not even opening a discussion about whether all this is ethical.
