Savage/Stevens rifles
I have just been browsing the Savage pages, when I noticed a Stevens rifle listed for the 'New in 2005'
It looks just like a Savage 10-110, just without the accutrigger (in other words, just like my Savages), anyone have the scoop on this?

Stevens Model 200
Savage has a website at www.savagearms.com and lists a number of new rifles by Savage and Stevens. Looks like some decent rifles. All the best...

Hmm,
Savages answer to Remington's 710. I wonder what Big Green's answer will be in this glorious race to the bottom.....? JMO, Dutch. |

Well Dutch, I don't think it's the answer to the 710, it was here first, but why change the name of the already good 10/110 ?
Why stop total production of an already good rifle. Except for the trigger I never ever had a problem with the old Savages. Which are the new Stevens

Why a new name? Simple. Savage has basically owned the entry level market for the last ten years. Then Remington came out with their "me too" 710.
In the mean time, Savage has been moving "up market" in general, with better finishes on their varminters, better triggers overall, and better stocks. Remember, it is hard to make money on inexpensive products. That said, they have the production capacity to keep filling the bottom end of the market, and they are also not willing to let first-time buyers go to Remington. So, they bring out the Stevens. It doesn't drag down their "main line" products, and it keeps pressure on Remington. Looking around in my gun cabinet, I find a number of the old Savages, and two thirds have new barrels..... It's the rifle that gets shot around here. I'm just wondering what Remington's response will be. The 710 was a pretty amazing strategy for a supposed market leader. FWIW, Dutch. |

It's hardly a new idea. Marlin had (and discontinued) their Glenfield line, Winchester had their Ranger. Even Weatherby did it with their Vanguard line.
Savage originally bought the Stevens company and continued to use that name on their lower-tier line and shotguns. They're just going back to it now is all. As pointed out above, Savage has been moving up in the market lately, and offering more and more up-scale guns as they did. To keep the entry-level niche market, they're taking this already proven step. Smart. In fact, I always thought it was stupid for Remington to make the 710 under the Remington name. The smart thing would have been to re-brand it to a "Little Green" product line.
