Government purchase
I am seeing adverts in Shotgun News, where if you pay for the information (go figure) , they will tell you how to purchase M1's and 1917 Springfields from Uncle Sugar. Up to eight a year.
To me it seems a bit wishy-washy, because I wonder does the US still even have these in stock in some armory? I mean the M-14's and older M16's seem they would be in stock by the train loads. And years ago I posted a question, about the US selling surplus rifles to citizens, and if I remember right the answer was a big......."ah-NO!" NOW IF IT WOULD BE TRUE How could average guy/gal (one each US citizen) get this informanion?

Go to www.odcmp.com that's the US Gov't Civilian Marksmanship Program.
You can find out how to qualify and purchaes a rifle, and what they have available.

Jack nailed it!
The CMP sells surplus rifles and the website explains the process and requirements. A 1903A3 Springfield will run $400 and M1 Garands run from about $350 for rack grade to $1,400 for collector grade rifles. Be advised, these rifles are not new and many have seen extensive service.
If you belong to a CMP-affiliated gun club, they can obtain discounts on these rifles. Hope this helps. All the best... Gil |

That's how I got my M1...thru the 'government' otherwise known as the CMP as already mentioned. And I didn't pay anyone for the information either. Maybe I should advertise in SGN .

Jon,
Where are you in Okla and are you a member of a club that is affilated with the CMP? OK...By your profile I guess you are in TX now, right. And a little off topic, but what kind of smoker do you use?

Dale,
at the first of this month I moved to Allen Texas. But I was not a member of any clubs since I moved from Germany last June.
