i couldnt have done any better in a all around rifle and caliber

ive been shooting my 2506 alot latly and started thinkn about things.

ive decided that i couldnt have done any better in rifle selection and caliber, the rifle purchase was on a whim and it being good was pretty much just luck.

the rifle is rugers walnut blued m77 mkII caliber is the 2506. barrel lenght is 24" and is a magnum taper. the rifle shoots better than i can and is a dream .

i have never bedded or floated the barrel and probly never will, not the way its shooting now. it doesnt shoot like my 22/250 but its not far from it. itl shoot varmits to elk with need be and has just become apart of me.

i got to thinkn that i could have spent so much more on a suposebly better more acurate rifle. these rifles only cost 475 new. others cost 300 or 400 bucks more and i feel ive gotten the acuracy that these more exspensive rifles have.

ive had the rifle somewhere around 4 years now and its had a ton of rounds through it and still shoots 10 shot groups through a smoken hot barrel to my standerds. well i guess id have to check on that. been probly a year since i punched paper with it

the only mod to the rifle has been a trigger tune that i did myself. i did some research asked around alot and finaly ended up tackling it myself. did some polishing and got it down to a crisp 3 lbs wich is only .5lbs heavier than i set my remington triggers at.

the rifle wears glass that is priced more than the rifle itself and may be the reason i get the results i do. i truly belive that you cant shoot for darn without good glass. if you have to compromise always try and save some money on the rifle purchase. youl be rewarded by putn that money saved back into the glass. im kinda true beliver that you cant go wrong by buying the glass first. that way if you spend to much your always forced to skimp on how much you spend on the rifle instead of the other way around.

this could be any caliber and rifle desing and make it all kinda comes down to the individual shooter and there needs and wants. these are just my exsperinces over the short time ive been getting to kow my rifle. along with a few others i have.

I got my M77MKII 24" Mag. conture Barrel .25-06, 6 or 7 years ago. Its got a blued barrel and walnut stock also. Mine has been bedded and free floated. I went and changed the trigger to a Timney, and it now has a 1 1/2 pound let-off. I put a Leupold 3x9x40 Vari-X II on it and it now has a set of low rings instead of the standard mid hight rings.

Best 3 shot group to date is 0.118", and it will consistantly group under 1/2" and most of the time under 3/8". It will also group under 1 1/2" at 200 yrds. and if I do my part will put 3 under 3/4" at that distance.

I can go to the range everyday or once every couple of months and the first round from a cold barrel at 100 yrds is going to print 2 3/4"high 1/8" right every time.

I still want to put a steel floor plate on it someday but I don't think there is anything else that will make it better.

I really like the .25-06 cal. and even though I've thought alot about getting other calibers and rifles, I always come back to thinking why change what works for me.

i love the 2506 and the rifle is in my opion one of the best for the money.

i cant tell you groups size at 100 or even 200, but i have printed paper at both those ranges and it prints plenty good enough for me. im pretty sure mine prints were i want it out of cold barrel from day to day or week to week.

talking so good about it almost makes me want to break down and scrub out the bore. but i cant do that cause then ill be inclined to punch paper. and its got to be dead on every day of the week.

though one of these days i gota break down and realy get after it.

glad to here yours is as good and in a 2506 nonethe less

Hey Evan you have almost got it right with the almost perfect rifle/calibre for varmint to big game. One calibre larger and you would have had it right. Make mine a remmy 700 BDL Or Sako finnbear in 6.5/06. Flatter down range trajectory with 100 gr bullets than 2506 and more energy at 300m with a 120 gr than a 270 win firing 140 gr. With 140 gr projectiles will take the largest deer with ease out to 350 metres. The 6.5 is the most versatile calibre from 260 rem through to 264 winmag on paper or in the field. Find someone who has been around firearms for a while and I'm sure you will find they don't disagree. Accurate, Flat shooting and hard hitting. This is the perfect calibre. Now lets see the fur fly

My 6.5x55mm shoots 100gr PMC ammo very well. Pluse I can take large game like moose, elk, and black bear. It also shoots very well in the wind.

tried to talk good about the 6.506 awhile back but it didnt go so well.

i do belive the 6.506 will stomp the 2506 in the ground as an all around varmit to elk cartridge.

id like to give the 6.5 a try someday.

I had wanted a .25-06 for over 30 years. Finally got around to getting one earlier this year, a Remington 700BDL. It's a real sweetheart, and I could kick myself for waiting so long. I've already started making up for the lost time. Best wishes.

Gidday Bosveldjag, Let us know how you go with that 264 winmag. I always thought it would make a mighty good thar rifle. If it knocks over plains game it wouldn't have too hard a time in the Southern Alps. Would also be great for the open tops shooting. Burns up alot of powder though. Thats why I thought a 6.5/06 would be the go. At the mo I am using a 3006 and a 260 rem for this but a little more reach would be good. When are you guys going to get serious about the super12 hey? Last things first!
Super12 and all rugby not really one of my interests. Especially now that SA Rugby is managed by the heavily tanned guys!!!

Will keep you posted on the 264winmag. However in the RSA with our new firearms act it takes ages to get a new firearm licensed.
For example:
From 5/10/2004 till now 13/05/2005 I am almost halfway through the license
application process for the 264winmag.
Hope it all speeds up now in the 2nd part - looks like it!

Thar are Himalayan thar. Its a mountain goat which originally comes from the Himalayas funnily enough. They are a really tough animal that live on the top of the biggest hills you can find. A very solid animal that can take a lot of punishment. A real challenge to hunt. Find out more by having a look at outbackproductions.co.nz/thar. They can only be hunted here in NZ as they are endangered in the Himalayas.

Must be the same type of Indian mountain goat that had been established years ago in the Table Mountain reserve in Cape Town.
It is now threatening the survival of most of the indigenous plant species in this reserve and I understand it is very difficult for the Park's Board to hunt them on Table Mountain.

Once I've got the .264 Win Mag I'll offer my services to the local Park's Board - positive that the .264 will take them out one by one!

Well, there is one round that does everything the the .25-06 does that I like better. It`s the .257 AI. With it you shoot the same bullets as the .25-06 at abt the same veloities but use alot less powder, the cases don`t strech as much, and the round is inhearently alittle more accurate. When my boy grebs one of my guns to shot a groundhog that`s the one he grabs. But he likes it because it leaves such big holes.

This is my first year with the .25-06, a Remington 700BDL. I'm still working up loads for it, and I think it's going to be a good one
once it's broken in. It's only grouping 5 shots at about an inch right now, but I'm noticing some interesting signs. It's been shooting almost all groups from 75 to 120 grs at this " figure so I guess you could say it's consistent. Once I start to concentrate on one load at a time the group size should come down quite a bit. It's certainly a pleasant enough rifle to shoot. Best wishes.
