powders
I am looking for a website that had listed the powders the various ammunition companies use. IE: It listed what powder Federal used in their match ammunition. This website acutally listed the brands of powder (who they bought their powder from) in which they used in manufacturing their ammunition.
If you know of the site or know what brand type of powder Federal, Remington etc. use, please let me know. I am looking to duplicate the factory rounds with the powders they use. Stat highthrill1@comcast.net Last edited by highthrill; 05-29-2005 at 08:21 PM. |

Sorry I haven`t seen such a site but, I`d queation any web site that claims they can tell you what powder the ammo manufactures are useing. The powders used by Federal, Remington, ect are NOT canister powders, they buy them in bulk and change the charge to match the burn rate of the new powders when starting a new shipment. They also don`t give the manufactures of their powder suppliers out to the public so any claim is a guess at best.

OL' JOE IS CORRECT, THE MAJOR AMMO MANFACTURERS ORDER X AMOUNT OF X POWDER AND THEN LOAD TO A PRESSURE LEVEL. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND THEY DO NOT UTILIZE A PER GRAIN MEASURE.
SO WE CAN'T DUPLICATE THEIR POWDER, AND I DOUBT WE COULD EVER DUPLICATE THEIR LOADS. WE COULD PICK A CERTAIN POWDER AND BULLET WEIGHT AND DUPLICATE THE FACTORY VELOCITIES BUT THATS AS CLOSE AS WE MERE MORTALS CAN GET. NOW, THIS INFO IS JUST WHAT I HAVE READ, SOMEONE ELSE MAY COME UP WITH ADDITIONAL INFO.

I can only confirm what you've all said. The ammo companies don't use the same powders we do.
We use "canister" powders which cost more because they have to be the same (or nearly so) from can to can to can to... The ammo companies have bazillion dollar ballistics labs, so they can buy bulk lots of powder and tailor their loads to that powder until they run out of it. Then they start over with the next batch. We don't have that luxury (or the wallet to buy 100,000 pounds of bulk at a time) so we depedn on canister grade. Bottom line: You can get close, but you cannot exactly duplicate factory loads with the powders available to you.
