colorado sections 36 & 45

MY UNCLE AND I ARE PLANNING ON HUNTING THESE SECTIONS THIS YEAR AND I WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE HAS ANY INFO ON THEM OR IF THEY HAVE HUNTED THESE AREAS.

No I haven't hunted those areas but they are in the high country. I would get in the best shape as possible and try to get here as early as possible to get use to the altitude. I see you from the "Redneck Riviera"aka Miracle Strip- I used to live there many years ago.

Yeah, I'm in the Air Force stationed at Hurlburt Field. I am originally from Nebraska and I have never been Elk hunting. My uncle has been numerous times and we are going when I get back to the states from this deployment i'm on. I stay in pretty good shape so i'm not really worried about that, I just don't want to get skunked. I am spending a lot of money for this trip, I hope it pays off.

A good resource is the "Colorado Hunt Data CD" which can be purchased from the Colorado DOW, it has info for all the hunting units. I would try to read as much on the subject as possible it is VERY different than the deer hunting you might be used to in Nebraska and Florida. The altitude here can really mess with folks. It helps to get here early to adjust to the altitude, even if you are in good shape, especially coming from sea level (trust me on that one). Compass and/or GPS is a must. Be prepared for warm days or 2 feet of snow, which could happen in the same day. The weather here can turn deadly in a matter of hours. Bring a camera and enjoy the scenery.

What part of 36 (and which season) are you thinking about hunting? I have spent some time in the southern part of 36, in the Vail area, and may be back there for a few days this season.

Lasst fall I met a guy from Grand Junction who had just packed out a monster bull in Utah. He got it with the muzzleloader, had shot a bull with the bow that fall in CO, and killed a sheep with the bow in CO same fall. Is that you or one of your friends?

Nope, not me or anybody I know. Weren't you headed down to CO unit 66 after UT last year? Did you do any good there?

Yes after muzzleloader deer in Utah we headed to Lake City, CO.
I had never rifle hunted for elk, and we found out the wide open elk country we had muzzleloader hunted in 6 times empties of elk the first day. My brother and nephew found a herd on Monday at the top of a mountain. My nephew climbed the back side of it after going around two other peaks and killed a 4 point in its bed. The two of them took the meat out, 250 lbs of boned elk in one trip 5 miles. They are a lot younger than me, and stronger.

Thanks for the help guys. I got 60 days left over here in the desert and I can't wait to get back and buy my new gun. If any of you have any more info on these areas please let me know. Thanks
