Exclamation We're finally hunting in California!

Our "Balance of the State" opener was last Saturday. Went up Thursday with a friend of mine that I introduced to this disease as he was with me at last season's opener but never got a shot all weekend due to a rare issue with his brand new Extrema. This year was different. We are officially Spoony Kings!

Not all the fields are flooded yet but I had about 60% of my water and just enough to float the decoys and make it marginally attractive to the ducks.

This was the first duck of the season, a Green Wing Teal hen and Josh drilled it after it came screaming into the decoy spread!

Some host I was....looks like his coffee cup needed filling!

Jack was soaking it up as usual! His toe seems to be doing fine after 3 months of down time on the mend. He picked up like we hadn't ever finished last season.

Gawd how he loves to do this!!!!

On Sunday we had proven ourselves the "Spoony Kings!!" The early morning flight on Sunday was better than then Saturday flight where we had to wait for the occasional single or pair to wander in. We finished at about 9 a.m. with 11 birds, most of which were Spoonies mixed with a Gadwall, and a couple GW Teal. The Spoons were prolific and we weren't picky, we had a 6 hour drive home in front of us and Josh wants to experiment with some spoony recipes so ashootin' we would go!

Lot's of smiley mallards on that strap!!

You would think this guy was tired or somethin'.

After 2 days of hard work, great retrieves, and an incredible find of a Mallard we cripped and went to retrieve about 3 hours later, I guess this boy was ready for a rest.

A swim in the canal behind our trailer, good grub, and soft king sized bed was waiting at home for my boy. This is the beginning of our 6th season as partners. Our time together is just going way to fast.

Congrats Treedoc on all the birds. Sounds like you guys had a blast. Your boy Jack sure looks like a tuckered dog in that last pic. Enjoy every hunt with him - cause the years sure do fly by with them.

That is awesome. I hope that I have just one weekend like that this year.

As far as your friend not having his coffee cup filled, I would take the ducks over coffee anytime. Coffee and food is for when the action sucks.

3 days and a wakeup for us. Season opens Sat. and we just got back from putting out the rest of our decoys. You got me all fired up now, my best friend "Cricket" will be on her 11th and very very limited year. Her hearing is gone but she still moves like a pup. She just deserves the semi retirement. I just don't have the heart to tell her she can't go so we made an extra long ramp for her and we are in a shallow water blind so not too much swimming.
Time with these "friends" does go by way too fast.
