I grew up with an English Pointer and English Setter when I was really young. Did a ton of pheasant hunting back then too. After that, we got an English Springer Spaniel and still continued to do upland hunting until there was very few pheasants to hunt anymore. The last time I went hunting for wild pheasants was 20 years ago.
Now, Maryland has tons of waterfowl, deer, and turkey, so I hunt them and the labs are what I need for the waterfowl. About once a year, we "hunt" upland at one of these game preserves and my lab, Nitro, does just fine with that stuff. We mostly hunt quail because the pheasants come out as hamburger (i.e., we can all shoot pretty well). Hope that explains the story, and just in case you were wondering, I have no idea why my dad picked all those English dogs when I was a kid.

i knew that would not take long for a response
hey fabs, i was seriously just kidding. labs are great. i just hunted last weekend with a pointing lab and was very impressed, although he did not retrieve ,,,,,must be too much "pointer blood" in him. any way most of the preserve guys in sd use labs as their dogs when taking out groups cause there are just so darn many birds flying around that pointers can get a little confused, and so many wild flushed birds are shot that it is just not that good for a pointer. but when they go out by themselves during the week they pull out the ole pointer.
i am getting a shorthair from gspx2. huntchat name. should be bred this spring i am looking forward to it. i had to give my vizsla away several years ago cause he was very aggresive towards my at the time 1.5 year old boy. before that i had a wire hair that was just okay... not very good bloodlines, but he was free and good for me as my first dog. any how did not mean to write a book here. have a good one. jj |

JJ,
What sucks about the internet is that voice inflection cannot be recognized or conveyed easily. I took no offense to your first post, or second post for that matter. Like you, I am pretty easy going (i.e., Foaming Bore Cleaner thread). The dog you get from gspx2 should be a good one. Good luck with it. I wish I had the wild pheasants around here like you have over there.
