300win with interbonds

hello all, i'm new to this forum but i have been watching for awhile. my name is dave. i have a question concerning hornady's 165g interbonds versus noslers accubond. iwas shooting a 165g Ballistic tip and getting 1" groups with 79g r22. when i switched to the interbond groups opened up to 2-3". iswitched because of jacket and core seperation, it was bad in my 308 and i thought it would be worse in the 300. how have your experiences been? should i try the accubond? i load my remington SPS in 300 out to 3.54" COL maybe it has something to do with the different ogives? just wanted to see what you guy's think. TX

The ogive is different on the Accubond bullets also. They are not the same as the Ballistic Tips. However, I have found the Accubond to be more accurate than the Interbond in several of my rifles.

Give the Accubonds a try. They have become VERY popular lately.

i think i have the problem solved...

the interbonds have a soft plastic tip, they will deform upon chambering in my rifle. however that being said, i did shoot four deer and one moose this year with this load. the interbond penetrates well. on the moose the first 165g struck her right shoulder while she was faceing, when she turned to run to her left i put another into her right shoulder. the first bullet traveled along the outside of her ribs about 30" breaking the last three. the second passed right through. i didn't recover any to weigh though. on the deer, only the first ran with a liver/lung shot, for about forty yards. all the others dropped on the spot. again no bullet to recover.

Welcome aboard! We're always happy to have lurkers step up to the bar.

May I ask at what ranges you've been taking most of your game? I ask because there's a discussion of bullet performance going on in the Reloading forum above, and part of the talk is about range.

Answer here or there if you choose to.

In some balistic gelitan testing the Interbond retained more wieght than the Accubond. As far as my tests go I tried 160gr Accubonds in a 7mmSTW I owned but found only marginal accuracy at first. To its credit I sold the rifle before I could do further testing so I never did find thier accuracy potential. As far as the Interbond goes I'm in the process now of load development with the 180gr Interbond in my .300 RUM I've had great results with other Hornady bullets in the past wiht my .300 and have no reason to think otherwise of the Interbonds. I'm currently using 180gr Swift Scirocco's in this rifle loaded infront of 89.5gr of IMR7828 this load yields 3276fps and 3/8 to 1/2" groups from a factory Model 700. These bullets have proven to be top notch game getters for me.

three deer at less than fifty yards, one at around one hundred and the moose at about one fifty.

Snoopy,

If these are your normal ranges than you need to have a better constructed bullet for close range high velocity impacts. This part of the reason I use Swift and Barnes in my Ultra Mags that way I'm ready from 50-500 yards.

i dont know...

if a better bullet is warranted (a more accurate one would be nice). the interbonds are passing through the deer, and thirty inches of solid moose is pretty impressive. i mean all we realy want is a bullet that will get inside and make a mess, right? any bullet that passes through is wasted energy, but i am a firm believer in the old saying. "it is better to have and not need, than it is to need and not have" i may have done just as well with the ballistic tips, maybe not on the moose. have you noticed we always remember the big buck that was too far to shoot, and thinkwe can overcome that with better, more powerfull, higher tech equipment. i have also noticed the ground shrinkage on the far shots tends to be more than on the close shots. O.K. now i am rambling, sorry.

I am a believer in complete pass through whenever possible. Ther is no such thing as the energy being wasted. When that bullet passes through the vital organs area it disperses enough energy to cause catistrofic damage and disruption. Also with an exit hole it becomes easier to follow a blood trail if required. Accuracy is key in any hunting situation also you can't kill what you can't hit. With any bullet/load and rifle combination for me it doesn't make it to the game field unless it delievers less than 3/4"in with acceptable velocity in a given bullet wieght. That's all my rifles I hunt with to include my .338 RUM on down and I'm a lucky one because my rifles are still factory and all of them with certain loads will produce 1/2 " groups with my hunting bullets. A person should taylor thier loads to what thier using it for. For an anythings possible load I use Swift and Barnes but that's just me. For anything else to include pronghorn hunting I've had great results using Hornady Interlocks and SST's.
