You know what, I am starting to get tired of worrying about hunters images. I have seen a ton of hunters around here because I know what to look for. Yesterday, I saw a guy at Sears changing his car battery, and the only way I could tell he was a hunter was by the glimpse of the bow that I got in the bed of his pickup as he lifted the tonneau cover.

Quite honestly, if that is the only vehicle that the guy can afford, I say so be it. Why should he be ashamed about going hunting, or not be able to go hunting because he cannot afford an expensive, or even moderately priced pickup.

See, I used to be that guy. I drove a 1980 Ford Fairmont that I had to start with a screwdriver in the ignition (i.e., my dad had drilled out the ignition when the key got stuck in it). That car was a piece of crap, yet I hauled deer, geese, ducks, and whatever else in it. About the only difference was that I usually threw the deer in the back seat all bloody.

At the end of the day, I think there area a lot of hunters out there that we just do not see (i.e., there are a lot of us).

My first hunting car (Well first car) was a 1965 chevy impalla 4 door and the elk might have fit in the trunk.

I have also used a VW jetta with roof racks to take a deer to the butcher shop. I did somewhat cover it with a tarp.

When I went to collage, Bemidji State, in northern Minnesota some guys shot a deer and hung it out the fourth floor dorm window for some of the northern style refrigeration. Yup, the RA made them take it down the next day but it didn't even make the school paper. Picture that at Berkley.

Them lil cars must be stronger then we think..but dern that's alot of wieght.
To touch on what Fabs says a lil..if there is any man out there who is "ashamed" to go huntin in any vehicle..wether it be truck, car er a cardboard box..then I would think that he really needs to spend less time worrin bout what other people think.
You'll have people who say "look at that fool takin his brand new truck through the mud huntin" and then you'll have "what a dirtbag drivin some beatup rusty peice of crap..must be a redneck"....everybody will always have somethin to say no matter what ya do. I say they can all kiss it..often..and enjoy it. Cause I'm goin huntin..even iffin I gotta ride a lil girls bike w/ a basket on the front fulla flowers...

btw...this is as close to throwin' a carcass on my vehicle as I have come. Who says that winches are useless on ATV's? This is how I got 200#'s of muledeer back to the cabin by myself!

That is one of several uses I have found for my ATV winch. I bought it for $50 at Harbor Freight, but it had no mounting hardware at all. That cost me another $40 or so plus some time figuring it out and drilling holes. Now I'd like to figure out a way to mount one on the back too.

I agree with you Fabs. I am tired of trying to hide my hunting from society. Ok I never did... but there IS pressure to do so. My brother calls for what he calls "Urban Camo" or not shoving our hunting in the face of society in general.

I do not comply. I do not go out of my way to keep game covered or to even wash the blood off my truck too often. I mean, during hunting season... there soon will be more right?

I want to know how they enough guys piled into that car to lift that elk up there.

I can remember a time not that long ago that it was common to see deer carcasses strapped to the roof racks, hoods, or tailgates of vehicles all over our roads.

Unfortunately,I rarely see it nowadays. I used to enjoy checking out the animals of successful hunters-kinda like at the check-in stations.

Incidentally, my deer at this time were strapped to the roof rack of my Chevy Caprice wagon. (The Grocery Go-Gitt'r-my older brother used to call it.

Quite a few years agoe while hunting the White Sulpher Springs area in Montana one of the guys in camp shot a big bull and also a very large mulie buck and packed them both out on top of a Country Squire wagon.

I'm not so much concerned about him not having a pickup to haul it in or his image as a hunter as I am as to how long a drive he has and how long the animal is going to be on top of the car. You take an animal like that, it deserves better than to travel halfway acrost the country on top of a vehicle spoiling the whole way and filling up with insects. It really doesn't improve the taste. Now if he is traveling a couple miles to get to his residence than I don't see a problem with it, although if it was me I would have tried to cover it with a tarp or something to keep undesirables out of the open orifices. just my 02 cents.
