win. mod. 70
Hey there everyone.A friend of mine bought a model 70 270 short mag last year. After his moose hunt this year he was target practicing, and had a couple of miss fires. The last miss fire,as he touched the bolt, the gun fired. He brought it back to the gun shop where he bought the gun.No hassels they gave him a new tikka 300 short mag.Which left me thinking this has happened before.
Has anyone ever heard of this happening. I would appritiate any input on this. Thank You. Ken.

Not to my knowledge,Wrenchman. But he bought the gun last year and fired about 4 boxes of ammo and realy liked the gun.He used it last year moose hunting, and again this year. Then while target shooting last weekend is when it miss fired.A year later and they take it back no question just got me wondering if it may have happened before. Were the primers dented? The fact the cartridge went off after fireing sounds like a hang fire unless the striker was delayed in its fall. If he was getting a good primer dent I`d suspect the ammo as much as the rifle at this point, especially since the problem just now popped up.

The reason I feel so much concerned over this is in the early 80"s
I bought a new win. model 70 in a 7mm mag.I cleaned and oiled that gun taking very much pride in my first rifle. Then one very cold -35*F morning I was shooting at a nice whitetail buck in Alberta and the shell failed to fire. After my 3rd attempt I watched the deer walk away only to hear a shot from my hunting partner who got what would have been my deer.I later deduced it was from my oiling and the extreme cold weather, thickening the oil.As there were little dents in the primers. But in this case,it wasn't that cold and the primers were not dented. Thanks for all your thoughts though Ken

JackRabbit,
I've seen the problem you mentioned before but it wasn't with a Winchester Model 70 and it was a .300 WSM not a .270 WSM. The rifle that misfired was a Kimber 8400 and it was my fathers rifle I was with when he took it to the range for the first time and it misfired. What happen was when he pulled the trigger nothing happened and when he touched the bolt handle to round disscharged. We inspected the empty case and tried again same thing happened. I never thought it was a hang fire because we have never had that happen before with our handloads so we took the rifle back to the store. They sent rifle back to Kimder and had the rifle inspected and worked on. When the rifle was sent back to us Kimber said they replaced the firingpin spring and that was it. I personaly had different thoughts about what was causing the misfires but I wasn't there when they took the bolt apart either. We generaly do our own fixing but in this case the rifle was right out of the box and we didn't want to get any grief from Kimber when sent it back for taking anything apart on our own. I hope this helps !

I quess they all have thier little problems.I wondered how often it occured, but not to much of a problem.I suppose it's important to always be leary of miss fires and keep muzzle pointed in a safe place when going to extract the miss fired round. Ken.
