8MM Turkish Ball ammo.
At the last gunshow I bought 3 blue cloth bandoleers of 70 rounds each of Turkish 8x57mm ammo for $7 each. The brass cased ammo has a nickel colored projectile and the ammo is put up on nice hefty brass chargers. It says on the headstamp "TOC/1939/7.9." The stuff is sure fire and accurate. I shot some yeaterday and the bullets punched right through a gong 3/4" thick of steel plate at 75 yards! I wish now I had bought more of this stuff. It has no markings to indicate armor piercing, but it sure acts like AP. I assumed the stuff is corrosive and water cleaned the bolt gun.
I need a source of late date non-corrosive 8mm Ball for the FNs and Hakims. Adam

Adam if you can find the 70's yugo 8mm ammo, midway has it sometimes, and some of the places that have links to gunboards.com have it from time to time as well.
Be careful of the turk ammo in your Hakim, I am not real framilier with the gas system on the fn49, but on the hakim you want to start from the closed position on the gas port, and single fire rounds and adjust the port as you go till they are ejecting just to your side. The turk uses a lighter bullet than most 8mm loadings, which pushes velocity up, and causes the Hakim to really sling the brass, if the port was adjusted for the normal 198gr bullet. Basically with the port fully open it causes a timing issue because of the higher velocity. If you start from closed, and fire-adjust-fire -adjust so it's just ejecting to your side, you'll be fine. once you've done it for any particular lot# just remember or wite it down and you can switch gas port settings by your lot#'s of ammo. |

gumpokc,
Thanks for the reply. I had a Hakim snap the extractor a few years ago because on first firing I later noticed the gas port was WIDE open! I have "tamed" my Hakims by turning the gas valve DOWN (shut) and worked slowly back open with various loads. The FN has a collar that can be opened or closed to give less or more gas pressure to the system. You obviously know your gas guns. Do you have a Tokarev M40? If so, isn't that gas system a hoot? Adam i wish i had a SVT-38 or SVT-40, had a chance not too long ago to pickup a SVT-40 in mediocre shape, but good mechanical condition missing the magazine, but had the good ole cash-flow problem so had to pass on it.
I will have one someday, just not yet :/ My "gas" experience so far has been with the Hakim, and my Ljungman (new baby only had her home for about 2 months now) and some research i was doing on a possible purchase of a mas 49/56. Very interesting little gem there, maybe someday i'll add it as well. I've had my hakim about 10-12 years now, i forget exactly when i got it, except i know i got it after I ETS'd the army in '92. She's a real sweetheart, I dearly love to take her out. She always gets her fair share of looks at the range, what with her size and..um..er..shall we say "vocal" abilities I'vve been pretty lucky with mine, her bore is somewhat dark, and had soem pitting when i got her, but she still shoots good. When i got her, i was rather confused by the gas system on it, (shared by the Ljungman and rasheed, and very similar to the mas 49 gas system) but i got alot of good info both here and from the egyptian firearms forums over at gunboards.com some _very_ knowledgable people there. The direct gas impingement system is really rather simple and straightforward, but it can be very picky and sensitive as you probably are quite framilier with. I had my ups and downs learning the system, but luckily never had anything worse than head ripped off a case The funniest thing i ever had happen with mine, was when i first got her, i took her out to shoot and like yours my gas port was wide open. Luckily i had some of the lower pressureYugo ammo, and all it did was rip the head off the case, sling the brass into orbit, and the remaining pressure coming to the rear popped the bottem off the magazine and dumped the ammo into the floor. I was _really_ surprised and thought i had a bad weapon, but after some checking into it primarily at the site listed above, i found out how to straighten her out. Glad i found out, cause she's definately my baby |

gumpokc,
Yep, the Hakim does look like a "Crew Served" weapons system. I get some odd looks when I push forward on the bolt cover to close the bolt! Wot did he do???? I love my Hakims and lug them afield for targets of opportunity. If I see another in nice shape, it will come home with me. Be well. Adam
