what's your favorite propellant

What is your favorite propellant? I know that when we say traditional we usually mean black powder, but I'll bet there are some who like pyrodex or clean shot or triple 7 and there might be someone who even remembers (probably didn't like) Black Canyon. Has anyone tried the new Pioneer powder?

I shoot a thompson renegade sometimes. Sometimes I shoot a zouave .58 (repro). And sometimes I shoot things I would discuss in this forum.

Sooner or later, I'm actually going to shoot my flintlock.

Swiss, Goex and Graf are all on my shelf at any given time. I don't do the replica powder.

I would love to try the Pioneer powder, but since they do not reply to e-mails or phone calls that is a bit difficult. I have been trying for almost a year now and have yet ot get a response.

Sounds good though..................any body else out there that has used it?

For your flintlock, you will probably be restricted to real BP. I like Goex 2F, 3F and 4F for the flinters and have used Pyrodex in the caplocks because it is hard to get BP locally.

My favorite is Goex.

I've only used pryodex, but it's always worked fine for me.
CVA ST. Louis hawken percussion, older model, bought and assembled the kit in 1992.

Pyrodex has failed me miserably! I currently use FFg and FFFg in my guns, and I'm thinking of standardizing on FFFg. Havent' tried any of the other 'wonderpowders'......if it aint broke, don't fix it!

Which pyrodex were you using? and what caliber?
Pyrodex RS = FFg
Pyrodex P = FFFg
Pyrodex Select = enhanced FFg (more consistant or so they say)

if by chance you were using RS or FFg in say.... a .32 or .45 rifle, that could cause it to not work as well as it is capable of.

We all have our products we like or dislike for whatever reasons, just figured i'd ask.

I was using RS (loose) in a .54 cal St. Louis Hawken during our Dec. muzzleloading season. After 3 days of hunting (and no, I didn't bring the gun into a warm house.....I took the cap off and kept it in the barn ) the gun failed to go off when I discharged it; it also failed on the second and third cap. On the fourth cap, it went "Fssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssstttttttttt............................................. .................................................................................................... ..........................................BOOM!

A little unnerving, to say the least! I have sinced changed over to "real" black powder, and have yet to have a misfire in a hunting situation like that. Also, I found that with pyrodex, even if I didn't shoot the gun, it was still corrosive to the barrel.....black powder has been somewhat forgiving in that respect.
I now have two other muzzleloaders: a .44 cap-n-ball Remington 1858 and a .62 caliber trade musket. I would like to standardize on ONE powder, if at all possible, and since I can use FFFg in all, and get good accuracy with it in the Hawken, I think that is what I will be buying from now one (GOEX brand).

Nods, sounds like just one of those things that happen sometimes. I've used the RS in all weather with no problems, that weren''t self inflicted by "cranial-rectal inversion syndrome"

Will the FFFg work ok in the .62?

Yep...rain, sleet or dead of night...loaded properly that real black won't fail you.
