06 S Dak update
Water will be the factor in the Eastern part of the state this year.
Very Very dry and I expect it to have a real hard impact on all the upland bird hunting. I am sure the chicks have suffered a great loss but I did see lots of last years birds in this area.

We actually had a fairly wet year compared to the last few. I haven't been out looking for birds yet but I expect it to be a pretty good year for them. I don't know how much I'll hunt this year though because my buddy with the dogs moved away. If I can swing it I may go see him up in Montana for some bird hunting.

Birds
The hatch for pheasants seems to have been pretty good here. Course there is lots of irrigation water....and coyotes foxes coons and skunks,,,,and RABBITS. Can't even grow a garden cause of all the rabbits. In just the 6 or 8 acres around the house here there must be at least 150 or so. Skunks have a hard impact on the eggs and small birds but I have visited a bit of a hard time on them. Killed 5 already and that is only while doing the irrigation work. One coyote so far but they are howling every night. Only saw one bunch of huns so far and one bunch of chukars

So Skeet, where are you hanging your hat nowadays. I think that I read in one of your posts that you are living in Wyoming now?

How about an update on pheasants from someone in South Dakota. We usually hunt near Mitchell, and the last two years have been excellent.
We'll be hunting the first week of November. What can I expect this year? |

GSP...I didn't see this reply to my post till today. I had to go back east for a while. I live near Deaver Wy..up near Frannie ...N of Lovell. Sorry for the slow reply... BTW the pheasants are still doing ok here. The young'uns are about 2/3 grown. Caught a young cock bird the other day on the road. He had apparently been hit by a truck and was stunned. Put him in a dog kennel for a day or two ..fed watered and he got really cocky again so I turned him loose. Really dry around here and haven't seen any more chuckars or huns.. Lots of coyotes. Shot one that was walking near the irrigation canal with my new 45 auto...bout 50 yds from the house.. Wasted the rest of the rounds on the others that were running.

I am up in the extreme Northeastern Corner of South Dakota (Roberts County). I have seen lots of Pheasants up here this year. We had a fairly wet spring, but then it got really dry until about the 1st of August. Since the first of August we have had above normal rainfall.
While I haven't talked to the local Conservation Officer about his brood counts from what I see when I am out in the country I see lots of birds. I am looking forward to getting out and getting a few Birds come October. Larry |

Well Skeet, I hope you get into alot of birds this fall. I know it's my favorite time of year. I love to get out there and watch the dogs work, whether I get anything or not. Like I've mentioned in many of my posts, the only pheasants we get are the ones the G&F plant. So I'm looking forward to heading for N.D. again this year. Have a good one.
