.17HMR vs. .17 Mach 2
What's the difference between these 2? It will be used for the ground squirrels that we call "whistle pigs", a smaller version of a groundhog. Thanks.

I think one is based off of a .22LR cartridge and the other is based on a .22WMR cartridge. Velocity is the main difference.

The 17 HMR does about 2,550 fps and the 17 mach 2 does about 2,100 fps. Just as the .22 WMR is faster than the .22 long rifle, the .17 HMR is faster than the .17 Mach 2. Why they didn't just name the 17 Mach 2 the 17 long rifle to avoid confusion, I have no idea.
