The Matches have begun
Matches involving surplus arms are getting underway. These are usually National Rifle Association (NRA) approved tournaments or Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) sanctioned matches. I am working with a fellow that tricked out his M1 Garand and cannot use it in some of these matches. The stock was glass bedded and is not permitted. He has another stock on order and I will install it so he can shoot the CMP course next weekend.
If you have not fired these matches, I would encourage you to check them out. Many local gun clubs hold National Match Course rifle events that are very cheap to shoot and you may qualify to purchase surplus arms from the CMP. In addition, they are a lot of fun and great practice. All the best... Gil

Gil,
Please explain why a glass bedded Garand is not allowed in rifle matches. All my National Match M1s and M14s were glass bedded by the government and were shot by me at Camp Perry. Does CMP have a "rack rifle" event that does not permit their glass bedded Match Rifles? If so, then use their rack rifles. Whatever. Adam

CMP rules
Determine what rifles may be used in certain matches. When I see the fellow, I will obtain a copy of the published requirements. The bedded stock was verified as unacceptable by the state rifle champ in his gun shop upon examining the M1 Garand. The champ is going to the same rifle match.
Most of us would prefer to shoot our own rifles instead of rack rifles. All the best... Gil

I agree, we must abide by match rules. At Camp Perry, at the National Matches, the BIG factor was trigger weight. We had "weigh in" every morning just about sunup. If a trigger did not pass, a colored strip was not applied to your rifle's trigger guard, rather you were sent to the Army or Marine Armorer's trailer nearby for refit and subsequent weigh in. Adam

a bedded M1 is a "service rifle" and is used (by 1% of competitors or less) in the primary service rifle matches at Camp Perry
the John C Garand Match rules are set up for "as issued" stock rifles only, no bedding, no match barrels, no NM sights, etc etc. here in Phoenix, we combine JC Garand with Curio & Relic or obsolete bolt rifle matches but we let anyone shoot. 7-Apr is the next one  Poole
