Late season cow elk

A friend and I are considering a late season cow elk hunt and need to find a ranch to hunt. If anyone has access to, knows of, or has hunted somewhere we can get on for a reasonable fee we'd like to hear about it. We're not looking for anything too intense, we just enjoy getting away for a while forgetting about work and relaxing outdoors. Over the counter tags would be nice so we can make plans without worrying about whether or not we'll be drawn. Any other suggestions would be great.

Thanks in advance, Indyhntr

I hate to bring a rain cloud, over counter cow tags for late season are available in units 25-26 only and there is a cap on the number's . These are relatively small areas about 40 miles north of Eagle, Colorado.
They go on sale Jul 9th at 0900.
As to reasonable fees, I wish you the best! I've been looking for that for years.
Good luck.
Dan

As a resident, I always put in my drawings, 1st choice male 2d choice female. I usually draw something. Worst case, I buy over counter bull. I hunt public land and have a ball being away from
work/phones and people.
Again, good luck.

It also makes a difference on what state you may be talking about. As far as I know Wyoming for example, does not have over the counter tags and like Dan said if you can find reasonable fees for hunting someone's ranch, I congratulate you because I haven't been able to find one. Also like Dan said I too hunt public land and have a ball doing it.
I do think there will be left over tags for most of Wyoming and you do have a good chance of getting one of those. It will probably be area specific though, so you will need to do research and see what area you might like. I personally like hunting the Big Horns. Lots of elk, easy to hunt, no griz to worry about and the wolves haven't worked the herds over yet.
Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention, that if you do hunt Wyoming, in Wilderness areas, you are reqiured to have a guide and it's foot or horse traffic only, so you need to pay attention to that.

Are left over WY tags available to anyone or only those that entered the drawing to begin with? How much are access fees now? Back in the early 80's we were paying $50 per gun per day if I remember right.

I have the website listed about three posts below this one for the State of Wyoming. you can get on and browse that for the left overs and when they are due in. But to answer your question they are available first come, first served. To answer your other question. The last time I tried to get on a rancher's land and that was for deer, was over a hundred dollers. I'm sure it's different everywhere you go, but gerenal rule of thumb is what ever the market will bare. I refuse to pay trespass fees, when I can go to the Big Horns and hunt for free, but that's me. I hope you can draw and I hope you have fun. Let me know if I can help anymore.

I had one guy..."I think of you like a brother".....said I could have a family rate...$1500 for the weekend. Dang, glad I'm not a
stranger!LOL As Elk are migratory, they may be one place today and in a couple of days, 30 miles away. You can do all of your homework and still not even see one.
I go to get out, the kill is a bonus.
Dan

FWIW, should you find a private place, be SURE of the acreage....lot of small operators have a small dot of private surrounded by public land. you will be paying for stuff you could hunt for nothing!

Man I'm sure glad that I'm not in that guy's family. I'm not sure I could afford him.
Thanks for the help Dan.
