youth bow and broad heads

my youngest son has been practiceing with his bow and looking forward to bow hunting soon.
The problim i am haveing is he is shooting about 40lbs and am not sure as to what typ of broad head to youse.
I have been thinking of a cutting broad head of about 95 to 110 grains.
I would think i should stay away frome chisel points or mechanical broad heads.
I would like a few recomendations if any one has any it might help.

Good decision to stay away from mechanicals, though they may work at that draw weight.
I wouldn't be too concerned about the chisel points, such as Muzzy's though.
Razorcaps would be my choice in your son's situation, or any cut on contact broadhead. He may actually be better off with a two blade than a three - for penetration reasons. Either way, as long as he keeps his shots to reasonable distances he'll be fine.

low lbs.small tips

First of all, thank u for bringing a youngen into the hunting sports.Your question never stated how far u plan on setting his sights. Most of your shots are between 10-25 yards,at this range just about any fixed blade heads will get great penitration,3 inches gets a lung.If u are looking for something to blowthrough, try the magnus stinger,100gr 2 blade or the new muzzy 100gr cut on impact, although a little over priced they work great. The better half shot her first doe at 23 yards whith a 35lbs browning and got a clean through shot,50 yard tracking and the doe was done...Shot placement makes all the difference..good luck this year...and shoot a biggen..

I have him shooting at 20 yards as he gets more sure of his self i am moveing him back.
I dont think i will have him practice past 30 yards and i have not let him shoot yet from a raised stand.

Consider the rocket 100 gr ultimate steel heads. Smaller diameter fixed-blade heads that will help with penetration. the only rub it that you won't have as good a blood trail as you will with larger diameter heads. JMHO

I used a 90gr 3-blade fixed broadhead on a light carbon arrow. It worked perty good and it left some hefty blood trails considerin it never went all the way through. I had a TERRIBLE time findin the right combination. A few years back, I was shootin a 100 gr broadhead w/ a 2115 alum arrow. Penetration was awesome....bloodlettin was not. When I switched to the lighter carbon, it seemed to help the blood flow better. I dont know why, you would think it would be the other way around.
I was pullin 50 lbs/26" draw.

I've never used a 2-blade broadhead. I used the 3 blade cause they made the 1 7/8" requirement fer VA. I've used mechanicals but every deer I shot with em ran mile fore they fell. ( I say every deer like it was alot but all total it was 4.) They didn't penetrate as well and some of the blades stuck. Like I said, I really went through hell tryin to figure it all out. I was tryin to be as responsible as I could and tested em all out fore I took em huntin on different materials...but it aint like the real thing either.
A freind of mine told me to remember that as low a weight i was pullin that the arrow was losing it's umph every millisecond it flew. I took to heart too. I can proudly say that I have only lost 1 deer bowhuntin...and that's cause it crossed the river on me. I never found a spot of blood on the other side and I walked that place for miles. On the other hand, all my experimentin on different arrows & such made me walk fer miles tryin to find deer, some with little blood spots every 200 yrds etc
But I did find em...I reckon that counts fer somethin

VA has a 1 7/8" requirement? Is that a minimum or maximum diameter?
1 7/8" is a huge broadhead. My 4 blade muzzys are 1 1/8".

Exclamation

I dont know why shooters with low lbs.on there bow wont shoot the larger cut on impact tips. The chance of getting a blowthrough is almost 0,with less than 55 lbs.the larger head helps, the bigger the hole the more blood loss the faster the kill and recovery..I shoot a 125gr.3 blade cut on contact with my 45lbs recurve and havent tract mort than 75 yards after a shot...give the bigger broadheads a chance,u can only try to do better..

I would definitly reccomend a cut on contact tip. My wife shoots 40lbs. and shoots the steel force 100gr. heads with a gold tip carbon arrow. She shot a 2 1/2 year old doe, and got a complete pass through. If you get a chance take a piece of deer hide, and try to push a chisel point tip through it and compare the amount of pressure you need to that of pushing a good cut on contact tip through it. I almost broke an arrow trying to push a muzzy through and the cut on contact went right through.

He has practised harder since he shot his deer in the youth seasen with a gun.
He thought the bow seasen opened sat it was a let down for him to find out it opens the first wich is monday.
I have been haveing a great time hunting with him i forgot what it was like to be a new hunter.
I had him out hunting tree rats he just dont understand why we sit tight for them after all we see them all day long by the house.
It has been years for me to do any real hard hunt for them i guess i should have had him out doing it before.
We have chased lots of rabbits he new just what to do when we jumped one.
