Birds were Plentiful

Made the annual pilgrimage for dove today. For a change, birds, water n sunflowers were abundant. Went by myself cause kid had to work. Had fun but it kinda lost something being solo.
Hopefully the weather will hold and we can try it together next week.

I went out with my dad today. I was late, and happened to pull onto the street right behind the game warden. Nothing like getting checked out by the game warden just as I get there and having to help others explain things to the game warden.

The birds were almost non-existant, but I managed to get my 12 in 28 shells anyway.

Hope you are able to get out with your kid next week. Dad and I will be going again on Monday. Hopefully, there will be more birds on Monday.

Went again yesterday with my dad and a couple of friends. Killed my limit in 33 shells. Burned 5 shells on a single bird and didn't even get it. Burned another round on a bird my dad wounded. Burned two more rounds on birds when I was distracted by one of my dad's friends talking to me. By the time I tuned in to both flights, I only had time for a single shot as they were going away. Of course, the guy came over to me to complain about the lack of birds, which I didn't agree with, and the neighbors that came over to ask him not to shoot their way because they had company over for a BBQ. I wanted to stick my gun somewhere that I cannot say on this board. He was the same guy that was complaining about the game wardens on Saturday, even though they only gave him a warning about not having his Maryland migratory bird stamp on him. Some people just cannot be happy in life. Look at me complaining about this guy. Sheez, it rubbed off.

fabs there are just people like that you know that. People who take everything as a personal slight, who see every problem as the grand teton mountains, and who would rather piss and moan about it than even think about climbing it. Most of those type I know cuss profusely on top of it. Not only do I not like to hunt or fish with people like that I don't like to be around them. Of course sometimes we don't have a choice in the matter. Just try to let it slide off so it doesn't spoil your day, thats what I do (or try to do)

For me a problem is a problem, but its also an opportunity. Not alot of birds? Show up your friends by nailing as many as you can with one shot each. Starting to rain? Do a quick little rain dance and laugh because at least you aren't stuck in the office today. Some folks wanting you to be careful because of a bar-b-que? Smile, nod politely, say "Well of course" and go on about your day as though they weren't even there (either that or blackmail them for a baked tater and a sammich )

Life is what you make it. It gives you manure plant maters. (Thats tomatoes fer you yankee types)

I once watched one of those type miss a 12 point buck because he started cussing LOUDLY at not having a shot on a 6 point buck because somebodies dog was barking in the distance and it spooked the 6. The 12 walked right out behind the 6 that was trotting off and offered him a perfect broadside shot until the frist F-bomb hit. . . . . . Some people.

I just told the guy to either go home or go back to his spot to hunt, but to let me get back to hunting. At the end of the day, he asked me how many I had. He guessed 8, and when I told him I had my limit of 12 he said "Of course, I saw you knock down 3 at once." Now, does this count as a triple? I shot one as it came in, then another right after it as it came in, and then a third that swung in right behind me. They were all one after another, but not flying together. I got to mount the gun three times instead of just once. I have never shot a true triple on doves.

As far as my shotgunning skills are concerned, I usually get plenty of respect from my fellow hunters. Even had my dad pay me a compliment about it once at a dinner over a friend's house when shooting skills came up, and to get a compliment from my dad is pretty rare.

As far as I am concerned, any day in the field hunting, at the range shooting, on the water fishing, or on the rode biking is a good day, even if there are a couple of rode bumps. A bad day of hunting is better than a good day working, so on and so forth.

By the way GOB, almost got maters and taters mixed up in my mind for a second. Thanks for reminding me what maters are. Too many miles on the bike today that has left me brain dead.

Now for a triple do you need to hit them all with one shot or what? I know when squirrel hunting a double is when you get a pair with one shot, usually a mating pair . . . . . . what a way to go. . . . .

Nah, usually a double is two birds with two shots, one right after another. A triple is the same way. Kind of like when a group of ducks or geese come into the decoys and you kill three with three shells. That is a triple. Now, a twofer is two birds with one shot. Done that three or four times on geese and it was pretty cool. Then again, I also killed four geese with a single shot while they were on the ground in the middle of a field. My uncle started calling me and my SBE the exterminator after he saw that one.

Talking

Not too shabby. A buddy of mine in high school once shot 9 squirrels with 6 shots on a trip out behind the barn. First time any of us boys had three doubles in one day. I am still trying to beat that record durn him! Best I have done is tied it once.
