Okay, I'll try to keep it short.
I'm shooting .280 REM in Rem 700 BDL w/DET Mag and 24" pipe. Floated barrel and a light trigger job. I've been playing with some loads using IMR 4350 and R19, nosler brass, WLR primers, and Accubond bullets. I like both powders for this load and both are shooting sub MOA at 100meters. Now to the question, well almost. On a cold barrel my first shot hits exactly 2.7" high at 100meters with no left or right drift. My next two in the string are triangling under 1" usually about .6-.8" group. My first shot in the next string (cold barrel) is within .25" of my first shot of the previous string and if you ovelay the two targets it is basically a clover leaf between the two first shots. I feel that this is what really matters in a hunting rifle being the first shot in a cold barrel under hunting conditions but a couple of buddies of mine think that I should be tightening up my strings somehow. Should I start chasing/changing my loads trying to tighten up things or should I stay with what I'd like to think of as my first "pet load"? |

Cold barrel .6"-.8" groups with a factory rifle and they want you to twik the load? You`ll likely burn the throat out before you get the groups to tighen notably from where they are now. I might play a bit just to see what happens, but I think you have a fine load as is.

I am not clear on the 2.7 inch first shot. Is that with a clean oiled bore or is that with a dirty bore that is cold?
Most rifles will not shoot to the same point with a cleaned and oiled bore. That is the reason you have fouling shots at a match or shooters shoot at least one round through their bore before going to a match. But if you are saying the first round with a dirty, cold, bore goes 2.7 inches high, well that is another story. If this is the case, check the free float first, if ok, get some acraglass gel, duct tape and get ready for a pajama party (bedding). On a 700 do a 100% bedding job. The action likes to be solid in the stock. Ed

I fired three shots prior to my "record" strings. So, it is a dirty or a not clean cold barrel. I want it shooting 2.7" high so I'm not complaining about that. Like I said, the first for both 3 shot strings are precisely where I want them to be, which is about 2.75" high at 100meters. That's why I'm satisfied with the combination I had listed.

If you are an inveterate gun tinkerer, as many of us are, there is always the temptation to try 'just one more thing' to tune a rifle. IME, the hardest thing for a gun tinkerer to learn is when to quit messing with things. You have a hunting rifle that is zeroed where you want it, shooting good groups with the first shot from a clean dry bore going very close to the shots from a fouled bore..... STEP AWAY FROM THE RIFLE ![]() You have your hunting rifle set up perfectly- now is the time to quit messing with it.

Sorry, I thought your first shot was a 2.7 inch flier. I am gone.

Second shot? Whats that? If your rifle is shooting as well as you indicate, there will be no need for a second shot. Personally, I don't do running deer unless absolutely trophy so last 19 have been 'one-shoters.'
You can predict with certainty the 1st and most important shot. The rest are second (and third) best....at best. If this is in fact a hunting rifle, rather than an X shooter, you should be happy with what it does. PS your second and third shots may take 'differential loading' (changing the powder amts. in those loads) to make them hit closer to #1. You sure it's worth the hassle? |
