Mass. is thinkin on makin spankin children illegal. They had "child-rearin" experts on tv this mornin talkin bout it. OK, first off, what exactly makes you a child-rearin expert??? Does it require gittin your butt whooped with a green apple tree switch?
If that be the case...than somebody git me a diploma cause I've graduated


So, now it's our responsibility to let our hethans act like hethans. Really, time out? What effect does time out have on a 5 yr old? When they are past the toddler age it's almost useless. Sure, spankin is a last resort...but sometimes...they NEED it. What's your last resort now? Besides..there is a big difference tween a smack on the butt (which hardly ever even hurts) and a belt, switch er whatever.
I almost hate to do this...but look at Katrina. All those people...waitin on somebody to help em. What does that have to do with spankin? Well...look at it this way. Severe consequences is no longer planted in the brain of kids who dont get spanked or repremanded in some form or another. "Oh well...I'll take all the flat screen tv's from the wal-mart instead of water and blankets. Somebody will come and get us." The thought of action & consequence is in the back of their mind..not at the front where it should be. The only place kids learn that these days is when they join the military.
Hello you minivan drivin, disney dvd collectin, subdivision dwellin bunch of pansy arsses.....you are teachin yer kids that there is no consequences of their actions, no matter how bad they may be.
Furthermore, the government dont need to be stickin their nose in where it dont belong. We got enough of that now as it is. Aint no politician, child-rearin expert, or a pansy arss gonna tell me how to raise my kids.

I will tell yall a story...when I was about 6 yrs old one of my duties was to get up the eggs every day. One day, I walked in the henhouse and started gettin the eggs up, when i accidentally dropped one and it broke. Lilred, bein Lilred, decided that eggs would be cool to shoot and throw. I dont remember why I thought i would get away with it..in fact...i have nary a clue as to what stupidity was goin thru my head at the time. So...there they went. I had at least 2 dozen in the bushel basket... was prepared fer war! I plastered the henhouse, I plastered the shed, I plastered the field where "the enemy" was. I whooped em good!
Then my Pop caught me. I ran fer dear life. When he finally caught me hidin in the closet...he made me cut the biggest switch and made me sit at his feet while he took all the bark off it till there was nothin but green & sap. Freinds and neighbors...I tell you..eggs are more precious than gold...even to this day. LOL
Point bein...it worked.

I think Uncle Sam needs to butt out. Not being able to spank and punish your children is asking for nothing but more trouble. We have enough dr spock wannabes out there already we don't need anymore. I got my hide tanned many a time growin up, an its a durn good thing I did too.

When do you stop passing laws that should be common sense and let people take control of their own lives? Eventually they will pass a law to make it illegal not to breathe (attempted suicide) and the jails will fill up with spoiled non-spanked children. Then maybe people will wake up.

Lilred, I saw some coverage on the news about that bill to outlaw spanking.
Apparently, it's one of those bills that gets introduced to keep a noisy constituent happy, that has no chance of passage.
A lot of that kind of thing goes on, both at state and federal level. Some person or small group makes a pest of themselves- and a bill gets introduced, so that the legislator can say " I introduced your bill"...ergo earning pats on the back and campaign contributions. And sometimes just to get a pest off their back.
There's a huge difference between introducing a bill and backing it, promoting it, and getting other legislators to take it seriously and bring it up for a vote.
I suspect in the back rooms where the microphones aren't, this kinda conversation is going on: "Yeah, I had to introduce the fruitbat's bill, or she'd never shut up. Let's let it sit for a couple weeks and then file it under G."

I went to Target today for our Christmas pictures. While I was there, I had to listen to a 2+ year old kid cry and carry on because his mother wouldn't let him walk around the store. I was getting sick.

Me, I got spanked all of once when I was a kid. I was 5 or 6 years old. My brother and I got into a fight over a stupid video game and we were sent to our room by our mother for the rest of the day to wait for our father to get home. If there was one thing my dad hated, it was fighting amongst ourselves. Anyway, he took off his belt when he got home and started with my brother. My brother started crying like a girl and he stopped. Then, he started with me and I wouldn't cry and I wouldn't flinch. He ended up hitting me with the buckle, by accident I am sure, and I was bleeding, but I didn't cry. It was probably 5 whacks or less in all. Afterward, my brother, an experienced punihshment taker, told me to cry right away and he would stop. Luckily, I never had to take my brother up on his advice because I was never spanked again.

We didn't carry on in stores like I see so many kids do nowadays. If we started to carry on, all my dad had to say to us was "I'll give you something to cry about when we get back to the car, and we knew he meant business."

My uncle used to discipline the heck out of my cousins. Sometimes he would pull them by the ear when he was really mad. He passed away a couple of years ago, but his three kids are all doing well. One of them had his own medical research firm that did cancer and aids research. Before that, he did research for NIH. After he sold his firm, he stayed on as a consultant until a job in Milan came up that was like a dream job for him. He continues to do medical research in Milan using state of the art equipment that he says is not available in the US. Another cousin just bought a $1.5 million 5,000 sqaure foot house on 2 1/2 acres. Of crouse, my uncle and aunt own a $1.3 million 4,500 square foot house on 2 1/2 acres down the road from him. The third cousin is an engineer for Chrysler.

If only a little ear pulling by every parent could achieve such results.

Don't get me wrong, I do not advocate spanking children while mad. It is kind of like correcting a dog when you are mad. You end up doing something that you normally wouldn't. I also do not advocate child abuse. There is quite a difference between spanking and beating. If spankings are leaving bruises, I believe that the parent has crossed the line. If they result in broken bones, they are so far across the line that the line cannot even be seen anymore.

Now, that just leaves me to wonder how I turned out the way I did and my brother who is a year younger than me turned out completely the opposite.

My boys 12 yrs old and daughter is 11yrs old. They haven't been spanked in many yrs but they can tell all about the last one.

And by the way the wife and I have been told repeatedly over the yrs what well behaved children we have.

I got spanked once or twice when I was a kid, and then it was nothing more than a swat. My parents also took us out of restaurants and movies and such when we couldn't behave properly. My Mom also abandoned a shopping cart a time or two when we wouldn't stay with her in a store. We were told not to interrupt when the adults were talking, to write thank you notes and that going to restaurants, movies and other public places depended on us behaving properly. We knew there would be consequences if we didn't.

My parents were frequently complimented on how well behaved and polite we were. I still get compliments on my manners to this day, I guess because a lot of people don't bother with the little politenesses anymore. I'm always grateful that my parents reinforced good behavior.

The rep that introduced the bill according to him, did not agree with the bill in principal(da why waste your and averybody's time). Only did it to shut up some liberal nurse.

The bill was the talk of the town for about 1 day. Haven't heard a work since. Has 0 chance of ever making it to a vote.

I just don't get it.
