Turkish SxS Sale @ Cabela's
My local Cabela's has a special sale on both 12 and 20 gauge turkish SxS's made for Charles Daly. Theyare marked down from $469 to $369, and come with 3 choke tubes. While not a premier collector's item, it is a lot of gun for the money, and much like the HUGLU or CX, at only half the price.
I inspected it carefully and found it to be well made and finished. Geener cross-bolt, single selective gold trigger and extractors. Nice machine engraving, and decent, but plain, walnut stock. Barrels are well blued and chambered for 3" shells. I bought one tonite, and will shoot a round of Sporting Clays with it tomorrow. JERRY

Sorry that I have to report this brand new SxS shotgun "doubled" and fired both barrels about 20% of the time. I don't know if that is common with these turkish DALY shotguns, or whether I just got a single lemon.
CABELA's took it back for a full refund without any hassle. The shotgun seemed well made and finished. Single selective trigger (the problem!), three choke tubes, and a nice balance. For the money, it seemed attractive and I liked the feel of it. JERRY

How enjoyable was it when it double fired? I cannot even imagine the surprise the first time it happened, or the pain. That would have probably broken me in half.

A "double firing" does get one's attention!
I was shooting on a sporting clays course, and the loads weren't real heavy - only 1-1/8 oz. 12 gauge promo's. The recoil was about like firing a maximum rifled slug load -- something I don't enjoy. Fortunately, I also had my 1905 L.C. Smith SxS in the car, and used it to finish the course. Its kind of odd that a 103 year old American shotgun functioned better than a brand new Turkish one. JERRY

One must be very careful with the guns made in Turkey. They look good and will shoot a few times. However, for the most part they have soft steel internal working parts. The bearing surfaces are very soft. They are so soft that the hammers and firing pins will brad over from their own, intended, contact after just a few firings! A word of warning. One of my clients was a repair facility for Huglu and the smith's comment was that the internals needed to be heat treated or case hardened before ever being fired.
You could harden the parts yourself and go on. Ed
