Started tryin to get in Shape
With Elk season 80 something days off, the ole goat has been working at getting into hunting shape! Been walking/jogging a mile in the evenings and early mornings/setups/push ups n twists.
Got the mile down to 10 minutes....not good but not bad for an ole goat!!!( JMO )......as stated, gonna do OC Bull. Been doing this sense first of June.... Any one else doing anything? Dan

I will be helping my son get his first elk in South Dak. and I have been working out a little just to save face with the kid so he don't have to drag the old fart off the mountain.

Been doing some mountain climbs / hikes. Just got back from Mt. Ranier where my son (age 30) and I both summited. Hitting the gym too, but I need to get to the range for sighting-in and lots of practice. 1st hunt for me this year will be muzzle-loader for deer on the Grand Mesa. I'm trying the new BlackHorn 209 powder, probably with Powerbelt 270 gr aero-tips.

The years I draw an elk tag people in my hometown think I'm training for the Olympics. I think it helps to get in physical shape but after hunting elk many times in some very demanding areas I think getting in the right mental shape may be even more important. Don't get down if you don't get one, or even see one for the first couple days. Expect to work hard and enjoy the hunt. One year I shot one of the first elk of the Wyoming elk season, 3 minutes after legal shooting time. The next hunt I got one on the last day of a week long trip. I enjoyed the second hunt much more even if the thrill was the same.
It's like in the movie Cool Hand Luke "You got your mind right Luke?" Get yourself in the right mindset and the odds are in you favor. Probably more important is getting comfortable and confident with your rifle, from field positions. Knowing you can hit an apple at 200 yards does wonders for your confidence when you have an elk standing at that distance. Shoot a few bricks of .22 ammo and a couple hundred rounds through your big gun and you'll be confident. Wish I was going with.....

I go through a couple hundred rd in the M70 a year...bench, setting, kneeling and prone...100/200 yds. Still can throw MOA's. I'm kinda funny, if I doubt the shot, I don't take it! Dan

Sounds like you've got that part covered! I'm amazed in elk camp when I see some guys come in with a rifle that they haven't shot a box of ammo through. Or if they have it was from a rest at 100 yards. I know a guy who went sheep hunting last year with a rifle he had Never shot. He had someone sight it in for him. He missed 4 shots and came home empty.
Do what you can to tilt the odds in your favor, plus it's fun to shoot. Have a great hunt.

getting in shape
training year round for track and field events mostly field the muscle tone is great plus strength i have enough, running i do a half mile in under 3 minutes thats at 280 lbs too, if i trim down to under 250 maybe i'll add running to my resume at a masters track meet, right now with 6 field events i keep busy,a very good exercise for hunters would be plyometrics , stretch, jumping ,skin the cats, bounding ,working the white twitchy muscles , or my favorite stadium stairs which is good cardioand works the redmuscles, for running try varied terrain and run no jogging waste of time besides does more damage than goodespecialy on the impact joints knees , hips, maybe one of these days i'll be rich enough to afford an elk hunt right now , i'll wait to get a pa elk tag
