say uncle
is it safe to use 3in magnum turky loads in my single shot 12 ga topper? there is no markings for magnum but it does have a 3in chamber. and if it were not for the 2once payload of shot i would not have thought twice. and so it is that i ponder, who would give up first me or the gun. thanks in advance.

Magnum in a Topper
Guess you are a braver soul than me..but I am a wimp about recoil. If it says 3inch chamber on the gun you can shoot those 2 ouncers through it. Gonna belt ya a bit but you'll be ok..specially after you take some aspirin

I depends on how OLD the topper is. If it is a damascus barrel then HECK NO. If it is not I say it is your shoulder and face so its up to you.
Me? I have shot 3" mangulums in my old H&R 20 with no problem. I won't ever do it again because I like my shoulder where it is thank you very much. GoodOlBoy

What they are tell you is that the gun with take it if you can. I picked up and H&R 12 ga. with a 28 in. 12 ga. barrel chambered for the 3 1/2 in. shells. Now if I can just figure how why I bought it.

Thanks for the comeback. I have been gone all week. Im realy interested in the new federal flieght control wads for turky hunting. My 1100 does not have a magnum reciever nor a 3in chamber, so that leaves me with just my 48.
It(48) also is not marked 3in, but it does measure 3.450 from edge of the barrel to the forcingcone. The gun is in fine condition, it does not have a dumascus barrel and still locks up tight. The gun is not marked as to the degree of choke, it measures .705 it has a snap on forend and a vented recoil pad. If i am correct it was made in the 70's but thats just a guess. I have fire slugs in it, they were brutal from the bench. After 3 round i had had enough the last 2 rounds were in vain. |

If you thought the slugs were bad, the turkey loads will be worse. I fired a turkey load in my gun by accident one day while I was waterfowling. Somehow, it got mixed up with the waterfowl loads. Granted, it was a 3.5" magnum, but my right hand was number for 30 minutes afterward, and my cheek didn't feel very good either.
The good thing is that you usually only fire a couple of slugs or turkey loads in a day.
