22WMR Coyote question

I asked this before, is a 22WMR, using a 40gr JHP Remington round, suitable for 'yotes?

I have my old Savage 24C/L in .22WMR-20ga, and my Savage 93 bolt action. Both are very accurate. The 93 helped thin a turtle infestiation at a friends stock pond last Tuesday, all head shots (take a bow).

But all I have for coyotes this year is my '06 or my .22 WMRs.

Jon.

'Yotes

Suitable if they are close..which is unlikely at least here in Wy. They see ya with a gun and they are G-O-N-E...and they are coyotes but you still want to make a killing shot. I don't want anything to linger..I killed one about 10 days ago with an old H&R 700 Semi auto I have..was trying for a couple of close PDs here on the place..So was the yote..I guess. Even got one of the PDs. Sad thing is the rifle slipped off the rack on the 4 wheeler and broke the trigger guard..now I gotta find one of 'em. Yeah right.. Might have to make one out of Aluminum or better yet..steel

It might be okay at 60 yds. or less, then for me it would have to be a standing or walking yote. I have on in a Win. 9422M and it too is very accurate, but not my choice for yotes.

Oh Heck

I was onluy figuring 35-40 yards. Coyotes are kinda tough animals..unless ya hit em in the boiler room with at least a 222.

Use the 06. Coyotes are hard to keep down.

Hey Jon,
I've used my 22WMR on yotes, but only from a stand at close range 25-60 yards.
Use heads shots, if you cant get the head, dont take the shot.

You can get some varmit loads for the 30-06 that will work really well, and give you soem decent range.
I actually prefer my .243win, or 8mm for yotes, 8mm would be equivilent to the 30-06 and works _very_ well.

Will it kill them YES. Out to 100 yards. Will you find evidence of them lying dead within 100 yards of the shot. NO. Not at 100 yards. They are tough little critters and will run a long distance even if double lung shots are taken.

I use a win 9422M and 50 grain federals for fox and within 100 yards chest shot DRT. There were not coyotes in Indiana then just fox. Now I use a rem 700 222 and they still run some. I think the 222 is oerfect for yotes and ground hogs out to 222 yards.

Glad to see your Win 9422M will shoot the 50 gr. Fed. Mine isn't so accurate with them, seems to love any of the Win. 40 gr. loads though.

If I could only have one gun,had to stay mobile, and could'nt take everything,it would be a toss for a flintlock or 22mag.What other cartrige can you carry 250 rounds in a pocket, and kill most of the air breathing things in north america;not easily but it can be done.
