New to Trapping

Ok so I got all the water drained out of my duck holes. But the beavers did a number around our drain boxes. The boxes have removable plates on the front the a pipe at the bottom that runs under the levee to drain the water. Can't think of the actual name on the box. So my uncle that owns the land gave me his beaver traps, conibear. He showed me how to operate them. But my problem is where to set them up. I have had 2 out since Tuesday (3-16-10), haven't caught anything...yet.

Just looking for tips on trap placement. The 2 I put out were right on a trail and then one at a entry point/cave in the levee. You could see heavy traffic so it looked good to me. Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm no expert (heck, I'm just starting out myself!), but it's my understanding that to produce beaver you need to use either lure (castor) or find where they have been coming on land, and in either case you will need to set up a 'funnel' using sticks to guide them into the trap. If you have it, hawbaker's book has some good illustrations. I'll see if I can find anything on the net to show what I"m talking about.

Here is a good video on setting a beaver set that I found on Youtube:

For the 'funnel' I was talking about, imagine sticks going out into the water from where the guy is standing in a "V" shape, with him at the bottom of the V.
Good luck!

The easiest palce to catch beaver, coon, mukrats, or mine is where they enter and leave the water. Keep your traps in the water and under the water.

My laptop has been at the shop getting work done. But the last week of March I caught 3 beavers, 1 coon, and 3 snapping turtles. One of the turtles was huge. But it seems like after I catch one beaver none of its family members are falling for the "trick". They have figured out how set off the traps w/o getting caught or just flip it over. But I'm not concentrating on it a lot now cause our cotton mouths are out like crazy.

are you having trouble with them just not going into your trap or with them snapping it off? a lot of times if you are trapping in clear water the beaver will see the trap and go right around it. thats when you need to find where he is going up on the bank.

Both. In the main area I'm trapping we can't find any slides so we busted narrow deep holes in the dams and placed the traps in them. They are mainly using the same material they use to build dams to either set it off or push it over.

Beaver get conibear-wise in a hurry if they see one of their buddies dead or get caught in one. When that happens you can make a runway set where the conibear is completely submerged. You put a heavy stick over the top of the trap so the beaver will dive under it. If the water is murky, this set will work well. If the water is clear the beaver might still avoid the conibear.

If that happens, you will have to resort to snares or footholds. For some good trapping information, you can google Cathryns Corner. There are some experienced trappers on there.
