Your go to rust preventative???
Recently I did a review of cold bluing products and in that review I included corrosion resistance the the various bluing chems but used only BC Barricade. I stated that I intend to do a review of a variety of gun-centric rust inhibitors. Im amassing (my wife says hoarding) quite a stock pile of CLP products focusing on the “P” aspects Protecting from rust. To that end I want to make sure I have a comprehensive list of products gun owners might use to stave off rust on their firearms so Im coming to you for suggestions of which products I should secure for this evaluation. Ive scrubbed the store shelves of Gander and Cabelas and Bass Pro and Farm and Fleet and Fleet Farm and harware stores as well as online outlets for rust inhibitors that cant easily be found. Id like to do a side by side evaluation of about 40 products and want to know what everybody uses to keep your gun rust free. I figure that by the time I buy the most common 40 or so that would cover the lion’s share of what the average guy uses.
Im focusing on manufactured/commercial brands and wont be evaluating home brews or gunsmith “secret recipes”. So please list em up and tell me that no evaluation would be complete without including brand “X”. Thanks for your help.

My Friend..you have taken on a trial that is almost impossible to complete.. Too many variables to figure it all out. When I was in Md..I used a product mainly because I was a waterfowler. I hunted salt water.. Here in Wyoming..heck ya just dry the darn thing off. LOL. BTW..in Md..hunting the salt marshes..nothing REALLY worked. You'd better clean 'em off when you were putting them away and a good strip down cleaning when ya got home.

Rancid,
Best of luck on your quest. I used RIG (Rust Inhibiting Grease) to grease my arms while I spent 4 years in the USAF, 1962-1966. I have two vaults and found Military Spec Rifle Grease works fine. I clean my guns and use Mil Spec grease and some guns have been stored for 20 years and the exteriors and bores are rust-free. I bought 4 one-pound coffee can-sized GI cans of Mil Spec rifle grease while in college circa 1970 and still have 3 full cans left and 50% of can #1. Adam

Thanks I am not only looking for long term storage solutions but actually regular CLP (emphasis on P) products that dont gum up the works such as a grease might.

Still waiting on the brown truck, FedX and the mailman to stop buy to deliver all the purchases but I think im about done buying gun care products for this evaluation. I’ll stop at 40 products. Here is the list. I’ll be at a gun show on Friday and unless there is a product there I don’t have on the list. I think I’ll get going on the evaluation.

Thanks for that link. It was helpful. I will be evaluating more than 4 times that many products but it was very well written and easy to understand. I hope to be as concise.

Like many gun owners, I've used most everything I could get my hands on. Now all I use is Eezox on all firearms. It was my muzzle loaders that sold me on the brand and many of my friends have switched to it as well. It does it all; cleans, preserves and prevents rust. A tiny amount goes a long way if you do a good cover job on all metal parts.
