Question Horn powder measure?

Ok trad shooters. How in the HECK do I create a measure from horn or antler to throw X grains (say 68 grains)? IE so if I was creating a powder measure to throw 68+- grains of FFg which should ALSO be 1 ounce of #6 lead shot, or 2 1/2 drams........

I am lost here... I am looking at buying this item http://www.trackofthewolf.com/Catego.../SHOT-DIPPER-D

But I would like to have something I can just make to do the job instead of paying the insane shipping prices.... I dunno I may be stuck with buying the dipper.

Thanks

Richard

Y'always make it so hard.. Get a Lee dipper kit.. Makin yer own sounds good and looks fine and purty.. but easy is better less'n you are lookin fer purty. Otherwise it is trial and error on a horn or antler. You do realize no matter what...you should have a GOOD powder scale to check the dipper(of any kind) on. The markings on that there dipper is an approximation you know. I have a few of those ol dippers anyway. One was pretty close..the other ones not so much.

GOB,

If you have your heart set on antler or horn, I guess ya gotta go look for a road killed deer or elk.

I found that empty brass cartridge cases work as powder measures. At my gun club, the brass barrel yielded nice .45/70, .444 and some WSM cartridge cases that I hack sawed down to the proper size. I smoothed the cases up, polished with Brasso, tied a leather thong to the case head and the other end to my possibles bag. It works in Tioga County, PA. It's gotta work in DEEP East Texas....

Adam,
When you put your horn up for the summer, watch out for moths, their larva eat horn. A buddy of mine collected old carved horns, now deceased, showed me a trick, empty the powder out and put a couple of moth balls inside the horn. Stops moths in their tracks and the moth ball penetrates the horn. You just empty the moth balls out refill with powder and the horn is ready to walk the woods.
