Cherrywood stock set on the M1
Some time ago, I bought a rack grade Dane from the CMP. I didn't like the wood on it, and after seeing a post by Jack Stanley and his fine piece, I was hooked. I called Wenig's and they had some "standard" grade cherry lyingh around, so I had them make a chery stock set. I then had them send it of to Dean and I in turn sent him the M1. After a long wait, I finally got the knock on the door from Mr. Brown representing UPS.
On a scale of 1-10, I think that its a 9. I am very happy with the quality of the wood, the grain for a standard grade is very nice. However, I guess I thought that it was going to be a darker shade of like a cherry- maroon color. Mine is like a light to medium color tan. Maybe its because the type of cherry was differant from Jack's. I had him repark it, he put on a Criterion barrel, and fit and refinished the stock set. Her are some pics- Your input is greatly appreciated....... http://photobucket.com/albums/0603/L...20stock%20set/ |

Itcboy,
Nice looking stock. I got a Garand from DCM in the early 1980s that has a perfect cherry wood stock. I got a P-17 Eddystone in the 1960s that also had a cherry wood stock. Adam

I had this stock custom made by Wenig's. Cherry was not issued on regular M1's. Birch and walnut was. I am not doubting you have cherry, but are you sure? Thanks for the compliment- MIke |

Nice pictures
I cannot tell what type of finish is on the cherry stock. If you want a darker stock, a boiled linseed oil finish might make it a bit darker. On the other hand, the stock could be stripped and stained a darker shade. All the best...

Went to the range to finally test the "new" M1 that Dean's did for me. This is the one that has the cherrywood stock set and a new criterion barrel. I was pretty satisified with the whole day, I put about 200 rounds through her after doing an intial breaking in. I was shooting from 130 yrds, using Korean surplus off the bench. I was shooting at 8" shoot'n'c targets. Here are some highlights....

Cherry will darken a bit with exposure to sunlight. In a year or so, that stock will be a bit darker than it is now.
