Rotory vs Rack and pinion steering

I've converted the old jon boat from tiller steering to wheel steering.
I had 2 ,actually 3 options. The rack and pinion system that came with the old motor I bought or the rotory type that came with the used steering console I bought (or) an old pulley system given me by a neighbor.
I chose, $ or rather $ it chose$ me $, the rotory system. So which is best?
