Shooting cast bullets in military rifles.
A local club holds occasional military rifle cast bullet matches. The course of fire is 20 rounds at 50 and 100 yards; offhand and from the bench. There are many impressive groups fired from an assortment of military arms.
I cast lots of rifle bullets out of wheelweights. Most bullets take a gas check and are great for fun shooting. Some guys hereabouts hunt deer with their cast loads. I shoot cast bullets in the 8mms, 7.65s, 7.62s, .303, .30-06s, 7.5s, 7mms and 6.5s. Cast bullets develop less recoil than jacketed loads and are fine for new shooters to get acquainted with rifle shooting. Who else uses cast bullets in military arms? Adam

Adam i have not as yet done so, But i am interested in doing so.
I would probably be looking at 7.62x54r (m44) or .303brit (#1mk3) since I use either as a brush gun. Have you any experience with either caliber in the cast bullets? |

gumpokc,
Yes I cast bullets for the 7.62x54R and my .303s. I like the Lyman #311467 173 grain gas check bullet sized .311 for both calibers. This bullet is a multi-groove semi-spitzer projectile. I have tried a 180 grain spitzer cast bullet which was not as accurate for me and a 180 grain flatnose bullet, that does not feed reliably in some rifles. My favorite powders are 2400, Unique, and IMR4198. Adam
