I was talking to a hunting buddy at church the other day and he informed me that him,his father-n-law and other hunting buddy all drew tags for unit 7 goat and moose for Koyukuk. I asked him if they applied as a party and he told me they each put in separtly and got lucky. They will be hunting with recurve on all the hunts since they film them and are putting out hunting videos.

Lucky buggers. The last time I had gotten drawn was ten years ago and that was for any sheep in Chugach for bow and I got sick so I was not able to go. I figured I would of gotten drawn again by now, after all that was the first time I ever put in for a sheep tag.

Thinking of heading down towards Mcarthy this fall and kick around the hills.

It always seems like you run into somebody with all the luck in the world. I know a guy out here who drew 3 tags in one year, including Farewell Bison.

Anyhow, are you headed after sheep near McCarthy? My partner and I might hit the Brooks Range for sheep, but we aren't positive yet. I have to check things out first.

I forgot to say what I was going for, yeah sheep. It is 3/4 curl down that way and I friend of mine that has a camp below me for moose lives there and he says it is pretty decent hunt. I figure this might be my only way of getting a sheep since all the full curl areas I hunt are heavily congested and anything over 3/4 gets shot. At that rate only a few select ones actually mature to full curl and they are the first one to go over the backside of the mountain.

Not sure I am going to make it afterall, my hunting buddy just got his papers to head to school and then they are shipping his unit off to Iraq(National Guard). He says that with the school and then his fun in the sun/sand he will be gone for almost 2 years. That puts a crimp in my hunting trips, I am trying to groom another guy right now to see if he will be a good reliable partner but I have a hard time trying to get together with him to do any hunting. I figured last moose season would be good time to bring him out since there was going to be 5 other guys in camp if it proved that he would not be able to come thru in a pinch, but he was unable to get time of from work. Next I have been trying to get together to go hunt rabbits but again our schedules are opposite so that has not happened. I invited him on a hike above Kenai Lake in the spring for black bears and I have not heard back from him on if he is interested.

You ever have the problem of not having anyone to go with that you could count on?

It's one of my biggest pet peeves. I can't stand it when someone backs out of a hunting trip or are unreliable.

It is also hard to find reliable partners that are as committed as I am about the hunt. It drives me nuts when I go on a trip and end up doing all of the work. Or they wimp out and can't go the extra mile. I don't know about you, but when I commit to a trip, it's full tilt boogie. Get in shape, gear up and plan. Being able to hunt in this state is one of the biggest privileges I've ever been allotted and I sure as hell don't want to take it for granted.

I hear you on the "getting in shape" part. I have lost over 30 pounds and use my treadmill for 3 miles or so on the steapest incline so I will not have to worry about gettin winded while humping up and down the mountains. I let my self get out of shape last year and I sure did feel it when it was time to hunt moose. I got lucky and it only took me a couple of days to get used to the hiking and getting my wind, then i go and shoot a moose right in front of camp, from where I stood looking over the bull I could see the cook tent. I do not mind humping moose out of the back country but that sure was nice driving the wheeler right up to it.

Last fall my kids hunted with me for a couple of days and they had a great time seeing moose and when they saw a bull they kept shouting "Shoot it, Shoot it". I got such a kick out of having to explain to them what size we were looking for and them just looking at me like I was smoking something, it has horns, what more did I want. But they are only 5(boy) and 3(girl). I like your signature about "taking your kids hunting so you won't have to hunt for your kids", this is so true.
